In the process of rebuilding a saloon window (if the French plexiglass suppliers ever reopen their factory after the annual 4 week holiday!). Aluminium channel frames approx 9.5mm wide. I have a suitable rubber seal of 10mm incl the plastic and am considering some sort of lubricant when refitting. I obviously need something that will not affect the rubber seal so my question is; what will be best?

I have/can get most of the silicon and lithium sprays etc.

All thoughts appreciated, as always.

Silicone grease is used on rubber parts for diving purposes. Wickes also sell a silicone-based lubricating fluid for assembling their rubber-sealed soil-pipes. I bought a bottle for that purpose when rebuilding my bathroom, and have found it useful in fitting various other things together since.

A novel alternative would be an "intimate lubricant" (sold by Durex etc) as they need to avoid dissolving latex condoms!

KY jelly works too.

Readily available indeed, but not good, as any tyre-fitter will tell you. It corrodes aluminium over time, be it wheels or window frames.

I suppose the stuff they do use in tyre fitting bays would do the business on the windows ?

I read somewhere that washing up liquid contains salt and, for that reason, shouldn't be used for washing cars (which I have been doing for years!).

Halfords sell a rubber/plastic lubricant. I have successfully used it to lubricate car window seals. But water would probably be worth trying because you want something that will not leave a residue behind.

I never knew about Washing up soap having a high salt content!!....hence why you shouldn't use them to wash cars! But like Parsifal been doing it for years with no side effects......

Thanks for all your thoughts. Took me a while to get the picture as well but worth the wait. Think I'll go see Woger and Woopert on the Yassou Nafti. They look like they should have some KY I can borrow....... Let you know if it worked....
