Having just finished Ellen MacArthur's autoboigraphy I am now in dire need of another good boaty read, fiction or non fiction.

Any ideas for now and to add to my letter to Santa?

Like you I enjoyed Ellen's book, the thought of going around Uk in a 21 footer - scary!

Anything by "Sam Llewellyn" should keep you going.

There's Pete Goss's book. or Tom Bullimore, maybe Piddle of the Sands (Erskine Childers) or Alec Rose with My Lively Lady. Loads of others, look in the mags.

Have you read "One Summer's Grace" by Libby Purves? All about the delights of boating with 2 small kids ;o)

Very few good fiction authors write about the sea - Sam Llewellyn is the main name that springs to mind, as mentioned above. So far as non fiction is concerned, Chichester's Gypsy Moth book is OK, but much better imho are "My Lively Lady" by Alec Rose and "A World of my Own" by Knox Johnstone.

In a couple of years' time, you can start reading Arthur Ransome to the kids......

'Coasting' (sailing round UK as a novice!) and 'Passage to Juneau' by Jonathan Raban.

'Old Glory' (down the Mississippi) by Paul Thoreau. (I think ?)

All Roger Pilkington's books on motor boats across Europe (possibly out of print, but worth finding 2nd hand) -or you can borrow from me!

Riddle of the Sands - Childers
Sailing alone around the world - Slocum
Bill Tilman's sailing books (hard times in a Bristol Channel pilot cutter).

Interesting comment. I must admit that I am more nervous in a motor boat than ever I was in a sailing boat. I had 3 sailboats in earlier days ranging from 18 - 26 feet and always felt safe even in f 6ish and a good chop. Their stability is much better with deep keels and low ballast and wind pressing on sails results in leaning over but with it a certain 'firmness' that is missing on a motor boat. My 18' 6" marine ply Caprice had actually sailed transatlantic before i owned her. Whilst it must have been very uncomfortable with so little space, I can believe it would have felt 'safe'.

As for a good read, if you can find a copy try 'My Love Must Wait' by Ernestine Hill - a historical novel about Matthew Flinders charting Australia.
Alos brilliant are the Jan de Hartog books - A Sailors LIfe, The Call of The Sea, Captain Jan etc

Don't forget "Three men in a boat" by Jerome K. Jerome (if you haven't read it already.)

Penguin Popular Classics.

Try "Titanic Voyager" by Patrick Stenson - The story of Charles Lightoller the only senior officer of the Titanic to survive and, to my mind, the hero of the disaster, saving many lives particularly those of Stearage Class.
He went to sea under sail at the age of 14 and was shipwercked four times, including on a desert island. He was a gold miner in the Yukon gold rush, a cowboy, and a captain of a destroyer in WW1 which rammed a German U boat. On retiring he had his own motor yacht which he took to Dunkirk to rescue troups from the beaches early in WW2.
My Hero!!

I finished it today. Its a good yarn and worth the read for anybody who has a power boat.

Didn't think "Passage to Juneau" was too good although "Coasting" is terrific. I think Old Glory is Raban too, not bad.

There's something about "Riddle of the Sands" on Radio 4 at 11.30 on Thursday, my mother told me, 100 years since publication.

Try "Shrimpy" by Shane Acton. In my opinion its brilliant - but don't read it if you are in any way dissatisfied with your job / lifestyle etc. It will make you want to sell up and sail around the world.
