Husband thinks he is too busy and clever to do RYA course so I may have to go it alone. Is a 31 year old woman going to look completely out of place on a course which I imagine is mostly male dominated or should I just go for it?

You could do the RYA Dayskipper shorebased from home if you wanted, give you a better idea of what to expect.
If I were you I'd just go for it, been on loads of these, everyone's a bit nervous at first but its amazing how quickly all thats forgotten and the common interest takes precident. Its very interesting and rewarding, plus you can wave it in hubby's face if he gets too big for his hobnails!
Good luck.

We normally have 1 or 2 ladies doing Day Skipper or Yacht Master at our Yacht club, they are not bottom of the class either.

Re: Tart!

Hmm. Loads of strapping young lasses do the RYA courses without bleating about their figure, undoubtabley your hidden message. Best wear sensible shoes, modest tank top and full anorak but which leaves it unclear as to how many clothes you are wearing if any, guaranteeing no difficult questions. Also, you are no less than 34, admit it!

Most sailing schools do them , not sure about motor. I knew a very good woman Instructor who wouldn't teach these courses - apparently the atmosphere was Hen Night / Ann Summers Party for the full five days. With a male instructor the biggest danger is caffeine poisoning - so many women come on these courses believing the only useful thing they can do on board is make the tea.

Where on the Thames are you based? If near Marlow may I recommend Bisham Abbey Sailing School - 01628 474960.

Speak to Roy May. I did my dayskipper theory with them. really excellent and included one married couple and a single woman. Certainly wasn't a problem for her. The atmosphere is very relaxed, no sign of testosterone anywhere!
