I've often wondered about the ad complaints here, but your screenshot now illustrates the problem well.
That whiskey overlay is scandalous! Glad my browser sorts that out for me

If everyone took the advice given here and installed adblockers then there would be no reason for advertisers to buy space on this site. Without that income, presumably the site would soon be closed down.
It is essential that the site remains attractive to readers who still see the advertisements otherwise it cannot attract the advertisers needed to support it.
Solentboy.... running a forum is indeed very easy.....
Running a forum with the load this one gets is somewhat less so...
It would be a bit more than 'a couple of hours setting up an easy alternative'
If it was me running it, i'd stick it on Amazon's EC2 infrastructure and run it with a shed load of processing capacity.
I do however agree robustly with your comments about the potential to make money.... there are opportunities screaming out.
Hmmm.
Hi Sky TV. I'm a very busy person and I can't be bothered to watch all the blasted adverts you put on and I don't have access to a PVR to filter them out. Please remove advertising from your TV programs.
Pretty much the same thing!
But that just proves my point - the OP has "tuned up" his system to make up a little for his poor internet connection speed. That is not IPC's fault, or the fault of the web site design, which was what the OP's original moan was about. He was ascribing the blame for his poor experience to the wrong quarter. With a bit more tweaking he might be able to turn the ads back on and still get an acceptable browsing experience.
