A day trip in South of France (with pics)

We just returned from a holiday in the Antibes/Juan-les-Pins. We got to enjoy varying spring weather from a bit of a storm to beautiful sunshine with a very gentle wind.

Great pics Scubaman, thanks. I'm embarrassed to say that after seven years in Antibes I've yet to walk round the monastery, so I've put it on the definite list for this year.

Were you there over the night of Sunday 15th? The "bit of a storm" hit F9 and blew stones off the beach which closed the coast road. I had to take the boat across to Baie des Anges shipyard at 9 am the following morning, but fortunately the wind dropped off in the early hours so the trip wasn't too bad, although there was obviously still quite a big residual swell.

Yes, I noticed the road being closed as we were driving back from Baie des Anges. We had to take the 'inland' road.

Wow, there must been quite a swell to tackle. Driving along the Quai des Milliardaires the waves were breaking over the breakwater and our car got properly drenched. The big boats were rolling quite a bit too.

very well done Kivi, and very nice pics as alway's

you make many of us to shame, with your just do it attitude,
renting a boat, in winter, in a not familiar (to you) region, and go for it !
while owning a very nice boat yourselve in another region.

also in this region, have spend quite a few occasions at anchor between the lerins, but didn't bother / too lazy or too occupied with the guests ;-)
to visit the island, and the famous monastry

many thanks for sharing !

Bart, compared to your achievements with Blue Angel I really wouldn't make too much of my humble little trip :).

For those interested in a summer pic - same island

On the topic of storm, this is what we saw at Port Vauban a day or two after it

From a distance I thought they were towing the whole boat. Would be interesting to know what happened to the rest of it.

Actually I think that boat sank last summer, and was "beached", mostly submerged, at the entrance to the port for ages. I've no idea why it's taken so long to deal with it. Maybe it was broken up more by the storm, and the flybridge section floated off.

No, nothing to see in this thread so I shall move on in self denial :)

I see JFM and the SOF tourist board paid to you sneak in a subliminal message 3rd picture form the end !

As usual a wonderful trip. Not only lovely images but a very different feel compared to the usual SOF bars with their over priced drinks, beautiful people and eye watering berthing costs. From your brief journey I could almost see a glimmer of potential, particularly if you can get out there before the crowds descend.

A great day of exploration.

Henry :)

Hi K., thank you very much for the pics! It even amplified my longing for the coming season!

Re moving your boat to the Med. Albeit summer in your latitude is quite short, your cruising ground is really beautiful. For you it is common to enjoy an island or a bay for you alone, you won't find that often in the Med. Difficult decision...

Best,
V

Hi V,

There is a lot of truth in that and I thought about it. There are two islands in the area (not counting the Porquerolles) and they seem to be very popular. There are 14.000 islands to choose from in the lake Saimaa :).

I thought you might have liked the pic :). Although it was a 54 :).

Yes, I had spotted that but the 2 are so similar it's easy to see yourself there.

Last time I was in Phang Nga Bay (Thailand) aboard a wonderful Halvorsen 50 Gentleman's launch http://www.apolloduck.com/image.phtml?id=335192&image=1 there was a P54 sitting at anchor saying "this could be you......"

I do know what you mean about the crystal clear water, it's very off-putting. At least with the murky waters of the Solent it's easier to trust the depth sounder !

Henry :)

To my untrained eye they are so similar, I had to zoom in on the back of the camera to check. Beautiful boats both, of course! :)

That is a fine looking boat indeed.

Tee hee! It was more "in yer face" than subliminal :D :D

Remember this pic from couple of years ago? Lavezzi, off Corsica. Defo a 50 not a 54 :D:D

Very good :)

The sad thing is I can tell you where the original photo was taken and it wasn't off Corsica.

One day I'm sure I will will wander down and have a potter. This thread is a great advert for what's there to be enjoyed.

Sorry, I'm a bit late to this thread. Thanks to Scubaman for the lovely pics as usual.. You're making me quite wistful, I've only been down to SoF once this year so far, I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms.

Anyway - here's our close encounter with the fire brigade, this was between the islands, April 2011, taken from Match 1. [randomly off-topic: I celebrated the fly-by by buying a new motorbike, as I recall...]
