Just got in from a day spent messing about in a mate's 13ft Dory with a 50hp Mercury 2 Stroke on it. Great day here in Northern Ireland, a bit of wind, with the ebbing tide left for fairly good conditions except where the wind and tide hit the side of a berthed cargo vessel alongside in Greenore, where reflected waves made life rather interesting. fantastic fun pacing the Pilot boat out to the bar and round Haulbowline Lighthouse, we got rather wet with spray coming back against wind and tide but it was fun. We pulled into Carlingford for a look and found a 22ish bowrider of some description almost aground on a falling tide. We helped the owner pull the boat off the mud, with the help of his two mates in RIBs. There are advantages to a flat bottom, shallow draught dory at times! Anyway, If the guy reads these forums, thanks for the note and the Guinness tasted great once we got back on dry land. Anyway, we needed to blast back across the lough to clear the cooling water channels on the motor, after the silt we kicked up dragging the boat back to deep water. What a hardship!!!
Anyway, we had a great day and felt good that we helped a fellow boater, else he'd have been stuck for 5 hours until the tide rose again. That would have spoiled the day for his kids. A day spent on the water definitely beats a day spent working, hands down.
