Haven't been to a liferaft demo, but the flare demo I attended last year was an eye opener.

Many of the women could not set off the hand flares that required a good thump, though it was pointed out that adrenaline in a real life situation would give them the necessary incentive, and that something solid to thump on also helped - head of skipper that got them into the situation?

A Spanish Flare

One wouldn´t expect the Spanish to have this better,

But

All their flares, smokes, rockets etc work on a "Ring on a String on a Pin"

i.e. put finger in ring and pull string which pulls pin.

Brit ones use weird and strange firing mechanisms by comparison.

These kinds of flares are less reliable I was told when I used to work for Messenger Marine.
