...is the fact...that it seems that Heinz have discontinued almost all of their Tinned Sponge Puddings (apparently only the chocolate sponge is available...but not widely).....Other manufacturers and retailers have responded by offering sponge puddings which are microwaveable....which is next to useless for most sailors.

There are still a few of the tinned variety on the shelves....but when they are gone...that`s it

Questions should be raised in the House

Ps I know of no threat to FB Pies

they've got smaller over the years !!!! I stock up when their on special

Same thing has happened to Ambrosia rice puddings. I like cold rice pud and now have to have two at a sitting because they are half sized. And have you noticed how small the modern pint of beer has become?

Quite, have you tried getting a pint in europe of late! Standards are declining everywhere......

... Put your bonnet and shawl on and ... Don't come back without a couple of dozen treacle sponge puddings. ...

No chance! When we first acquired a boat, I bought a small stock of tinned puddings, savoury and sweet, thinking it was the done thing - an iconic part of the rite of passage. Mrs H made it clear very quickly that they were on the debit side of her sailing pleasure account and the balance being a fairly fine one anyway, they had to go. I do feel that I've missed out on something - but perhaps on an aspect of sailing machismo (one 's' short of masochism, I note) rather than culinary delight?

Gotcha! Boiling it bain-marie style is fine. Microwaving something in a tin will usually result in a lot of blue sparks and an ex-microwave.

It's a common fallacy that you can't put metal in a microwave, you can.

There's nothing wrong with our tinned beans.

thought that the problem was not putting metal in microwaves per se, but that if you try to microwave food still in the tin, the waves can't get at it to heat it up. indeed i know that bits of fish often have end bits covered in small foil caps to prevent them getting overcooked and then the foil is removed for the last bit of the cooking. but no treacle sponge puddings in tins anymore? surely that's one for nigel farrage to take up as it's obviously an EEC directive. the reason fray bentos pies are unaffected is that fray bentos is argentinian i believe. we fought a war against argentina but have good relations with our european brethren. funny old world............

Dont worry, There is a brand of long life individual sponge puddings in Waitrose called Auntys. They have sticky toffee, golden syrup, ginger syrup and spotted dick. Tried the first three and they were delicious. They are in a plastic tub and you can just boil in water to heat. I even did on a BBQ once when camping . £1.49 for two. Pass the custard :-)
