Have been ordered to present myself on Wednesday evening at 8pm sharp in the bar of our most prestigous local club,(Defaced blue etc),in order for them to satisfy themselves that I am of the right stuff to be a member.
What attire does the forum consider to be appropiate.
A/Tuxedo and cummerband
B/Naval blazer/White Slacks/Stripy tie.
C/Best White shell suit with Chelsea FC across the back.
D/Fairisle Jumper with trainer bottoms and Tilley hat.
E/Boiler suit with heavy coating of Anti-Foul(blue of course)
F/Anything that suggests you play golf and are a mason.
Conversation should centre around ....
A/Lots of jokes in poor taste
B/Anything that indicates you have a hard time managing on £200k a year.
C/Anything that hints that your drug dealing business is doing rahter well and looking for investors
D/Blue ensigns are for snobs ?
E/That most Thames clubs are wannabees and do not have a warrant etc.
Eticate.
Do I buy drinks for the whole bar
or
Sit nursing a half of bitter during the entire interview.
Do you pull out a thick wad of fifties when buying the drinks
or
fiddle in my purse for the exact money and settle up in 1p coins.
All suggestions welcome.
Ps.Do I need to dump the wife for the evening and hire in some 25 year old eye candy to improve my chances.

It's a non-starter really Fred, I'd normally say be yourself, but before you can do that you'd have to find yourself!

Maybe a year on the Thames would help.
Good luck

I say old boy - best thing is to send one's valet along to have a discreet word with the club steward chappie, don't you know. See what the drill is, what?

I shouldn't worry too much. Can't be very high up the old pecking order with a defaced blue ensign, can it? I mean to say - not like a proper club..

Good for them they have just gone up in my estimation I thought it was only Royal Clubs that keep the standards up. Hope they also (i) Elect new members on probationary period. (ii) Do not issue Warrants without checking the boat complies (iii) Do not issue Warrants until someone has been a member at least 1 year (preferably 2 or 3 years)

Get used to dropping "Old Man" and "Don't you know" into the conversation frequently, have a pair of glasses with the little chain to stop them falling off, and call the throttle controls - "the sticks" and for gods sake dont let it slip that you let your fenders dangle.....

Dont expect to meet anyone thats actually been anywhere on their boat in the last twenty years.

We are talking TMYC here and while I am not over fond of the club I have to admit their members cruise extensively and have some very competent boat handlers and navigators. True they adhere to many of the old standards but that is no bad thing.

Ah! If it is Rochester Cruising Club they very recently acquired the right to a Defaced Blue. They are a very easy going club and I have always found them exceedingly welcoming.

Need 2 people(club members ) of good standing to have known you since the beginning of time to be proposed for member ship.
(Apparently ex cell mates from your last bank caper do not count)

Application has to be on noticeboard for min 6 weeks to allow for objections..

Reference from previous club(s).

The interview!

Then on probation for 1 year.

You can "ask" for permission to wear the blue only after a minimum of two years blemish free service with club.

Not telling which till I get in. :)

Sounds to me that they are taking themselves seriously and trying to build a Club to be respected. More power to their elbow. Look how the Cruising Association have accepted anyone with the price of entry. As a result their Defaced Ensign has become an object or derision and flown by Wannabees

If its Rochester they are extremely nice folk, very welcoming and have a great bar. Moored there several times while in the area. Best of good fortune old boy. Been both sides of the interview thingy, unlike work at least you have shared interests:-)

So along we went

Went the whole nine yards and after having my yearly bath a month or two early and using large amounts of Brycreem, presented my self at the bar along with the missus.
Was run through our paces by one of the committee and his lady and told what the club asks of its members, which is basically to muck in and mingle and attend the odd work party to maintain the club facilities.Range of offerings goes from Admirals Cruise(blazer and flannels" to the sort of stuff found in all those non warranted riff raff Thames Clubs(shell suits etc:)).Wifes eyes lit up when information was given about certain dinner do,s that require posh frocks.
Anywho when grilling was over spend the rest of the evening nattering about Princess,s in general and the one owned by my inquistor, which has been up to the Baltic and down to the Med(and not by trailer either).
Paperwork up before the powers that be next week and if OK,yipee I will be allowed INSIDE a certain clubhouse when the BCC come calling in the next few weeks.
One quick question does my forum burgee fly above the one of my boat club or vice versa ?

If it helps, all visitors are allowed to buy several rounds of drinks without causing offence.

All very secretive stuff, should you really be posting it on such a public forum?

Bray CC would never allow such behaviour... :)

Quite simple. Senior Club comes 1st.

If in the waters of another club where you are a member then that clubs Burgee is first.

Exception. . . when flying their defaced Ensign then their Burgee comes 1st at all times.
