Came for a 'winter let' in Aldeburgh winter of 1979 with a woman friend, straight down to Yacht Club. What no sailing in November? I subsequently learnt. Started a business at the Maltings. Bought a big plywood cruiser from Martlesham creek, the deceased owner was involved in the early days of Suffolk Yacht Harbour, paperwork on board. Craned in and out with trip boat over the harbour.
Then barge sailing with the retrobates that used to get that far up the river.
Bought a little wooden sailing cruiser that was supposedly designed by Maurice Griffiths, with seagull. Got complaints because of noise.
Next was the Shetland motor boat, driving up and down the river. Didn't suit the wife.
Following divorce I sailed a Westerly Fulmar, with a divorced farmer from Dennington. A few years of Holland and Denmark.
Tried my hand at random crewing, another story.
Bought a Leisure 17 when a friend died, thinking, hey don't wait.
Upgraded five years ago to Leisure23. Clean machine, single VP2001 which is always a worry getting out of the River Ore. But, have lavished care and attention. Two winters ago I hand-stitched 10 odd shaped cushions, a labour of love.
This year I was offered a free pontoon in Walberswick but seemed to be stuck up the Butley whirling round in the wind.
So that's me. Malcolm Piano.
