Very much a novice when it comes to this subject, so please bare with me! :)

If you were looking to buy a boat to cross the chanel or even further what main points do you look for in a boat that would make it good and safe in the sea?

I asume such things like power, length are a major isue, but how long how much hp? also certainly the type of hull?

Someone has said to me for instance... It must have two engines and be at least 31ft long, is this true and a safe statement?

Thanks for looking!

btw, I hope I have posted this in the right area! apologies If I have it wrong.

If you want a mobo, then the QE 2 could keep you safe.

If you want a raggie, any decent one will do the job.

You wont find many mobos when I go sailing and I dont sail when the weather is good enough for them to go to sea.

Choices dear OP:D

Firstly welcome!

We need a little more Information please....as so far it is how long is a piece of string. Fistly what is the approx budget. Secondly are you time constrained or operating costs constrained. Thirdly for how many people.

That is a good starting point.

Thanks

Paul

As your posting on the MoBo forum i'll assume you are thinking of a motor boat.

The answer is: Any boat that has a fuel tank big enough. The rest is just down to preferences and the weather.

I have been across a few times in my 25 ft Bayliner, and on to the Channel Islands and this was starting out from Essex. It only has a single 170hp engine and I am more than happy to do it. Others would only consider it with a twin.

The bigger the boat the better able it will be to deal with any conditions that are less than favourable.

I guess the big question is: What's your budget?

I have just seen this post from the OP in another thread. Plenty of useful info.

So it looks like it's an £80K budget.

He already has a single engine 25ish foot sports cruiser

And I think my Bayliner might be off the list :D:D:D:D

Hello all,

I have desided to sell the boat I have at the moment (Falcon SPC23) and buy a bigger boat with a flybridge. I've always promissed myself one, once I had got the hang of boating with the Falcon. Its been afew years now and I've just recently retired so I think nows the time. I did afew nav courses this summer, as well.

I was hoping someone here could give me an idea on what boats I should be looking at that meet the following criteria...

Twin Diesel Engines, Flybridge, Bow Thruster, GPS and Radar

My budjet is 80k max

O yeh no bin liners please

Interestingly he also posted this in May

Hello everyone

For the last few years I've been enjoying taking my Avon Rover Rib 280 and Mariner 8hp or Mercury 10hp (both 2 stroke) out for spins on the local rivers and taking it down to skeggness for the sea and opening her up. She goes well for what she is (clocked with a satnav at 26mph)

But now I'm getting mad keen on the idea of getting something solid hull with abit more power, the main funding for it will be the sale of the two outboards and the rib, the ribs abit tatty, but both outboards are in very good working order, then I'll have 1k on top of that.

I've been looking at fletchers, rings, phantoms thats the kinda thing I'm after, I like the idea of maby putting in a foam mattress upfront (odv wont want to be anything heavy in the front of any of these boats) and then under the bench seat maby a camping stove, so I can camp on the boat as well.

It looks like 18-19ft is about the size that seems right, the front seems big enough for two to sleep in, and the cockpit has a rear bench instead of two other seats crammed in. I've got a 174hp/320ft torque VW Diesel Passat I intend to tow with (will that do the job?)

Question is what kinda of boat would be a good one to go for, the faster the better really, but I suppose its my budjet thats the stumper, I'm not at all afraid of doing abit of work either, I'm a car painter by trade to repair and painting to the hull is no worries what so ever, I'm prepaired to do the work to get the boat for the money.

Thanks for taking the time to read

Ooh err you sure you mean that ??

With reference to the advice givenn to the OP in the opening of 31ft and twin engines as a min.

31ft is fine, can be done in far smaller in the right conditions.

Twin engines, is nice but I would rather have one well serviced and well looked after engine than two unloved lumps.

If only a single engine have a back up plan, either go in company or join sea start or similar.

One area I would not cut corners on though is Radar, radar deflectors (Sea Me) and the knowledge of how to work it. Fog can set in quick in the Channel making it a scary place to be if you cannot see what is coming and be seen in return.

Also add AIS to that as an additional but not instead of radar.
