A beginner's guide to yacht configurations

While on the subject of whacky rigs, there were a few yachts or dayboats (1930s/40s/50s?) fitted with an experimental big 'helicopter-like'type rotor, but mounted vertically (horizontal axle) from the top of a modest height mast. Presumably worked like an autogyro rotor, and probably went quite well, as I seem to recall they were raced against same class hulls with conventional rigs. Risk of decapitating crew something of a drawback! (Depending on the crew.😁).

I've seen old photos of them online some time ago, but can't find them now, perhaps because I've forgotten what they were called. All my guesses turn up only modern Flettner rigs and air rotors driving water propellors, etc.

That does sound like the one I meant. Except that I thought the ring was outside the hull (as I hope I said) because I don't see how it could work otherwise. Pity the video doesn't work for me, to clarify!
Edit: the video is present on the Internet Archive/Wayback Machine. I think it shows the ring mounted on the outside of the hull, as you would expect...
