A beginners guide to being in the water?

Hi All,

I have purchased my first boat for us in the canals and rivers in Amsterdam.

Can anyone recommend some good resources for understanding the basics?

Kindle recommendations would be a bonus (if book) or good web links.

are the laws/rules international?

What kind/size of boat? I'd recommend an RYA course, probably not available in Amsterdam but they might have an equivalent.

Go out with other local boatowners, their experience will be invaluable.
