A "2" stroke of luck

Seagulls are pretty bullet proof. Clean the carb, new plug & fuel, check there's a spark & off she will go. Electric start is daft, probably worth removing that, you won't want to be luggung batteries around will you?

Pinstripe? Why not do it yourself for the cost of a tin of paint? Can't you get a roll of masking tape with a rip out centre stripe? The job's a doddle then.

Well i was told the boat was fitted with a seagull 40 but looking at the site they only ever went to 10hp
Ive just found this pic i was sent after it came out of storage for the first time ......

Any ideas what that one is ?

Although photos are rather small and wrong angles, it just looks like the larger of the 3 seagulls we had in the family. It features the fairly useless and often failing recoil starter thingy wotsit.

BTW, all 3 seagulls (aged 40-25yrs old) failed with cracked cylinders (my uncle says haven't bothered checking any) Is that a usuall failure?
This big one had a hell of a prob with the carb and piping from the tank.

Not so happy with them tbh.

[and no I'm not saying that to offer even less :p ]

that white o/b could be an Evinrude ? About 8 hp I guess.

And the 40 in the Seagull refers to the bollard pull in foot/lbs or treacle tins or something. About 3 or 4 hp on a good day, and running downhill.

There is quite a lot of valuable stuff cluttering up the floor, too....:)

Hmmm ive had a 25 HP Merc on it and have an 8HP Merc for the Thames but it looks a bit silly on an old boat . Is it worth getting this one done up ? Time and money isnt a problem as i past that point about two years ago
I doubt it would have been a 4HP as it was ordered to island hop in Scotland . Maybe i was mis informed about the outboard type or i have mis heard ?

to be honest, and not legpulling, that Seagull will not move your runabout fast enough to head upstream at times. Their virtue is that they are robust and steady, and a bit 'classic'.

It will look reasonably OK - perhaps eccentric is a better word ? - but a minimum of 6 - 8 hp is really required.

PM sent

The search goes on then . If i do get rid of the seagull it isnt for sale as i paid nothing for it so its free . Its the boating way on the Thames :)

I have a Seagull 40, it is about 1.5HP. Even the one you have is only about 4hp. It will look inappropriate but would move you up & down the Thames well enough.

How old is the boat? It looks about 1960's so why would a Merc look much different form that Evinrude? 8hp would be fine on the Thames & still allow you to sink racing sculls with your wash easily.

I just asumed 40 was 40 HP . I am told it is a race boat so i put the 25HP on it . She bloody shifted , i did a bit of wee and everything . :o
