I do not see any reference to the money wasted on the frigates last refit of over £90million by us taxpayers as she sank. She was never recommissioned after it and one of the lame RN excuses was they did not have any steam engineers to run her. Mind you the RN claimed the Britannia was not sent to the Falklands war as she used HFO, which as all the taken up MN ships ran on it as well as the Hermes, Fearless etc either shows up their ineptitude or barefaced lying - take your pick.

Devils Advocate:

If you could have predicted the fall of the Soviet Union, the end of the cold war, the end of the cod wars, the rise of global terrorism, etc. then maybe you should have been a Navy planner.

For myself, I couldn't see these things coming, and neither could anyone else in a position of influence, which is the main reason that the Navy currently has loads of redundant frigates and destroyers, and not nearly enough (or large enough) carriers...

On the point of the fall of the Soviet Union, why do we put so much faith in the EU going on.

Do you think they'd flog off the odd destroyer for a couple of grand, like they were with Vulcan bombers and Lightnings after the Falklands? I wouldn't mind one to get down to Crystal's mooring and back, or for holding the odd Gin party in Ipswich Haven Marina...

I've often thought what an impressive sight an old RN Submarine would make on my marina berth.
I could leave it part submerged, claim it's just 6 feet LWL and save some dosh!
