90 days possibly history!

Yes.

Our government did not regard it as being sufficiently important to do anything about it at the time. Instead stating it would be something that could be looked at later.

In other words, there are no votes in it for them.

Yes, agree. Johnson was so good on detail. But I think there are votes in it.

Why would a government that owed its existence to its virulent anti-EU stance do anything to benefit people who choose to spend a significant part of their lives living in the EU?

They are, in general, the sort of people most likely to have been strongly opposed to this country's leaving the EU and therefore most likely not to have voted for a party dedicated to doing just that.

No, it is standard for visitors from third countries to the UK to be offered 180 in 360. The EU population simply fitted into the already existing regime. The UK did not change anything.
This is where it gets confusing for me. My Canadian friends in Portugal had to go to Lisbon last winter to get a visa extension because they were running out of time after 90 days. Maybe the rules for Canada different then? Whatever the rules are, it won't change anything for me as I am resident, but I fully appreciate the difficulty it brings to live aboard cruisers.
