I have an old (but in good working order) manual horizontal windlass.
I think it was made by Simpson Lawrence due to the only marking on it: "S-L Hyspeed". It has a drum and gipsy, which feeds the chain down the pipe.

However, the chain slips when pulling in under even moderate load - I think the gipsy is too big for my 8mm chain (not just that it is a little worn).

Does anyone know where I can get an 8mm gypsy for this windlass? new or used? Any idea of price? Does anyone still make S-L windlasses?

Apologies for multiple questions, but thanks in anticipation.

The existing gypsy is very unlikely to be metric. Imperial measurement would be 3/8" 5/16", or 1/4". This equates to 0.95mm, 0.79mm, and 0.635mm.

your decimal points are in the wrong place but I know what you mean!
I think my chain is 8mm not 7.9mm(5/16"). I reckon my gypsy is more likely to be 3/8" so I need to find some bigger chain to see if it is a closer fit. (I cannot find a mark stating the size on the gipsy).
Thanks for your help.

There are 2 reasons that the chain might slip, one is that the chain is not 'calibrated' to match the gypsy and the other is as you suggest the gypsy is the wrong size ie the chain is say 5/16" and the gypsy 8mm/10mm/or 3/8".

If as you say the gypsy is for bigger chain, you might be lucky since the s/h chandlers or boat jumbles often have gypsies for sale in the smaller sizes as most people change for bigger chain, few people go for smaller.

But if your chain isn't calibrated to suit a windlass (much isn't, it makes it cheaper) it will still jump & slip.

you will need to get the correct chain for the gypsy especially with the 3/8" size, as it is well known that 10mm will not work on an 3/8" gypsy.
