Can anyone give me any history on the 8 square metre classification for yachts?
I think it was a rating for racing pre-WW2. but I don't know how it works. 8 Sq. metres is unlikely to relate to sail area... especially on a boat 39 foot LOA.

I assume it is the 8m class info that you are after and it still exists today. http://www.8mr.org/

I have info on three pre war 8m designs here in Uffa Foxes tomes on design seamanship and construction, What I can tell you is that. It was the smallest IYRU rules yacht with cabin accommpodation and that a 'young' owner could live aboard
all summer and sail at all the regattas. If you want more info I can scan the sections of books and email to you. As for the rules I am sure you can get a copy from the organisation.

Peter Wilson of Aldeburgh Boatyard has recently built an 8m. Understand he's the first person to build one of around fifty years. Doubtless he could supply all the information you need. OF
