70A battery charger advice

Just found my boat battery 70A charger not working. It's the original come with the boat since 1993. It might repairable or might not. So I start to search a new 70A charger. Any advice? Thanks.
 
Can your house battery bank actually accept 70A without boiling? i.e. Are you potentially buying something over spec'd for the job required. I ask because I have 3x 130 Ahr batteries and even when low have never seen them accept more that 30 Amp charge
 
I recently replaced an old Newmar 70A battery charger with a Victron IP43 3 outlet 50A unit. Great bit of kit. The old charger wasn’t fully charging my batteries and wasn’t as smart as the modern chargers.

All right. I just removed the old one and opened it. It's a simple big AC transformer. The input only has 1.8 ohm only, so its wire short circuit inside the transformer. Not repairable in this case. Time to replace.

Can't found any 70A one. Found very few options for 60A or 80A. Very expensive too. Look like need to buy a smaller one instead.

If you work as 10% of battery capacity you would need a 50 amp charger (4 x 135 batteries)
A lot depends on your battery useage. If you spend time from shore power, use a lot of battery capacity and need to top up fast you need 50+ amp. If you are connected to shore power for most of the time and lightly deplete the batteries when off shore power then a smaller charger should suffice, say a 30 amp one or even 20 amp
 
Now I am struggling between tradition AC transfermer and digital charger.

The old AC transfermer one served the boat for 27 years. It has a simple structure. So I think maybe it's more reliable then the digital one.
What do you think? Thanks

I’ve got the non Bluetooth version of this.

great bit of kit. I think it’s 30amp max per output so 90amp total in effect. I’ve got a shunt on the charger output and defo seen it push 55amp+ for a short time

it just takes care of everything ? mine will go to float within about 30 mins so must have enough whollop.

the app would be really useful too to see what each battery is doing.

As you have 4 batts, 2 could be joined to make one bank and fed with one of the outputs. That’s how mine are setup.

I have the 20 amp version of that 3 output charger and I am certain thats 20 amp TOTAL split between the 3 outputs. Using a clamp meter I have never seen more than 20 amp total between start/house/gen battery banks ie say 3/16/1. The ouput is split to the various bank's needs. The app only shows combined output not per bank

I am very happy with mine.

Going alternative, solar power. Since putting a solar panel on which delivers 10Amp throughout the day I have never bothered about battery levels again. It's proved to be a game changer on how I use the boat. Such a simple thing but what a difference it has made.
 
I found a secondhand 60A traditional AC transformer one. Only £205. I think I will go for that old school one as I am a bit worry the digital charger working in the engine bay will not stay long.

Okay. End up the secondhand one is not transformer. So I have to buy another new 60A one instead. And will also buy a small one say 5-10A only for the starter battery. So this will make the system have a backup charger if one of them broken in a journey. I just learned this idea from another thread here. Thanks
