May be in the market for a replacement, 7 inch size suits, good balance between the small 5 inch sets and the big ones costing over £1K: what is there to choose between the garmin 750, the raymarine a65, the latest lowrance and the trusty old SH300i, are the new ones sufficiently better to take the excuse to upgrade or stick with the SH300i and get it fixed?

Much will depend on how well you get on with the operating systems involved, and what you want to connect with.

My Raymarine e7 may be at the limit of your budget but it slots in with my other Raymarine kit and is easy to use. I also use it with my iPad to control it and I find the touch-screen quick and easy to get used to. It may be worth trying to future-proof your choice and bear in mind what you might be adding in the way of AIS, radar, VHF and so on, since an integrated system will work better in use.

+1 for the e7. Easily found for under a grand with Europe charts included. I've had mine for over a year now and am very pleased with it. Raymarine have also been good about releasing updates so all the latest stuff is supported and bugs tend to be ironed out.

Have a look at the Simrad NSS7 and the newer Zeus Touch (the latter has some remarkable software). Both will interface wirelessly with an ipad (if you buy the GoFree box) but never forget that an iPad meets the same industry standard of water resistance as soft tissue.
