I am thinking of hireing a flatbed 7.5 tonne lorry to move my boat.

What are the legal overhangs, width and length, before I need an escort?

This might help:

It might help if you posted up the dimensions of your boat.
How far do you intend to move it? If it is just a few miles, I doubt plod would be bothered about a small overhang? If it's heading off up a motorway, then everything will need to be in order.
A rule of thumb is "if it looks dodgy, expect to get stopped". By that, I mean an overhang of say three feet, with all the relevant warning markers, won't be a problem, ditto a foot or so either side.
A call to your local traffic police will probably help?
It's hard to give a definitive answer without the dimensions of both boat and vehicle.

The Irish Sea? Seriously, is a sea delivery not possible? It cost me about 75% of the road delivery charges all in to have Jumblie delivered by sea from Milford Haven to the Solway. Winter berths in Milford Haven marina are dirt cheap ...

Lawsons Haulage Cockermouth ,Cumbria moved my 31 footer from Essex to Whitehaven for £650.
The width of yours might cause a few problems for normal artics,ie its over 3m.Height is also an issue.
