I have a 40D which I acquired from my father, who bought it new in the seventies and which has done very few hours. It's amazing - well, it amazes me - always starts first time, runs smoothly and ticks over slower than I've ever heard any other engine manage. The problem with Seagull is the same as the problem with Westerly Centaurs: they are so strongly built that they survive to a state of mankiness which lesser types never reach.

Many thanks for the very concise reply, Pete. At least you didn't have the boat burst into flames around your ears as could quite easily of happened with an electrical fault!!!!!!!! Methinks all your senses will be very much heightened for the foreseeable future. :encouragement:

Enjoyed your video! So it's not just me! We're currently searching for a more modern replacement for the Silver Century. I had it in bits last weekend after the throttle cable gave up - amazingly it still worked even with a stripped thread on the bottom of the carb....

Dunno, but my reactions were tested the following day when Chris managed to lose his shoe overboard!

Ever since we first chartered a boat together the year after leaving school, it has been a standing rule that any item of clothing lost over the side is the cue for an immediate man-overboard drill. Haven't dropped anything for a while now and I was starting to feel a bit guilty for not practising, but I was glad to find that I could quickly put the boat back on the shoe without assistance (Chris was busy getting the boathook out ready to pick it up, whereas of course if he'd still been wearing the shoe he wouldn't have been available to help either). I don't think he enjoyed having to squelch back home in it though, having not brought any spares
