6 months sailing greece ?????

Dear all, my wife and I plan to sail the greek islands etc for six months each year, may to sept or thereabouts. We like the look of motorsailer, ie so you can get out of the sun as those of you who know, six months of it day after day is a bit much to take. Anyhow, so we need a good sailer but one with a wheelhouse/cabin, not just a sheet over the boom. we wish to sail most of the time, not like the flotilla lots who seem to motor all day ?? Roomy for us and the cheep holiday looking friends that pop up, ie around 40 ft. We look forward to all your expert replies. Regards, neil.

Six months a year, sounds lovely.
Not claiming to be an expert, particularly on motor sailors but are you sure a wheelhouse / cabin is what you are looking for? I would have thought it would be even hotter and airless under glass like that.
You say you wish to sail most of the time, are you sure you want a motorsailor then? In my minimul experience of them I didn't think they sail all that well. Mind you a good motor in the Greek Islands is a good idea as lots of times there is no wind or its in the wrong direction.
Our boat is an aft cockpit sail boat, it has a really good sprayhood bimini combination that are all joined together as one, extremely strong and offers excellent shade most of the time.

Hi Neil..if you want to sail most of the time why are you thinking about a motorsailer? ....Also if you have a cabin it will get like a greenhouse ..the reason that the flotilla "lot" motor is often because there is not enough puff to get them to where they want in the time available. We are doing the same as you.. in Greece but missing out July and August as (a) to hot and busy and (b) work commitments. Have a look at what other folk sail and see what will suit you best. Good fortune be with you!! These opinions are based on our own limited experience and you should take heed of all the advice from other forumites who may have much more .

I actually sail in Greek waters in a Moody Eclipse, a motorsailor. The raised cabin is more enjoyable than the submerged accomodation of real sailing boats as you can see all around. A bimini and an awning are essential. Make sure that you are able to produce whatever power that you may need as shore based power supplies are thin on the ground. Water also may be a problem. I don't have any regular mooring as Greek authorities provide harbours at minimal cost and anchoring outside is free. There are plenty of places to haul out for the winter and public transport is cheap and reliable.

I agree with those who suggest a motor sailer is not suited by reason of you needing a lot of sail area to move in light winds. When you have stronger winds eg 5s and 6s you will find it more comfortable sailing rather than motoring.

Before you make up your mind as to what you need go and see boats and speak to those who do what you say, out in the area of your interest. The boats in Greece are usually better value than in the UK and the people there will be happy to show you what works for them.

Thank you for your reply. The Moody Eclipse is exactly what i have been thinking about. From what i have read they seem to give the best of both. i agree that a 'motorsailer' tends to be a heavy tub, not great in light winds, but as said need shade and space. Will look more closely at them. thanking you again, neil. PS anyone have info on Nauticat 38/44. Looks nice anygood for the med ?

I had two motor sailors and was not happy with the sailing characteristics of either. Now I have a Hallberg Rassy with a hard top fits the bill in every respect and sails like a sailing boat should.

Bluewaterboats? That'll be Helga and Klaus then? If so, they are good people to deal with. Straight, honest and cheap!
Last time we spoke with them, they had unearthed some fine bargains too, located in the Med. Well worth a look on their website.

Yep, its them,

for a few days our boats were close in Kythnos and we had a good time together with these wonderful and honest people. They should be somewhere on eastern part of Aegean aiming to spend winter in Turkey.
