Hi. Ive read so many sites of how to do this, i got confused

Does "on the rocks" & rocking mean the same thing?

Ive finished the job, ive either done it 100% wrong or 100% correct.

Started on cyl 1. Tdc compression stroke, just before intake started to open on cyl 6

cyl 6 wouldnt move no gap, while cyl 1 i could move up and down, and get a gauge in.

I went through the rest in order using this method with the correct firing order.

Video attached, turn volume up, you can here the ones with a gap.

.40 was the setting, all were out @ 0.55 - 60

Sounds right to me.
I have always understood "on the rock" to be that point on the cam when on a given cylinder one valve has just closed and the other is just opening. Such that if you "rock" the crankshaft back and forth you see both valve in turn just moving. Which should be TDC for that cylinder.

Then go and check the valve setting on the other cylinder the manual tells you as they should both be fully closed and therefore you can move the valve "rocker arm " to and fro and set the gap for that valve.

Could be you are confusing the two terms even though you have done the job right.

I assume you did turn the engine over by hand for a couple of revs JUST to make sure it went round OK before trying to start it.

Regards Clive

I have the same engine and this was the proceedure i followed with a perfect outcome:-
Firing order 153624
Inlet and exhaust 0.40mm cold
21mm socket on front crankshaft nut
Valves alternate, starting from the front, exh/inlet/exh/inlet/etc
As cylinder 1 exhaust valve closes and inlet just starts to open, adjust both valves of cylinder 6
As cylinder 5 exhaust valve closes and inlet just starts to open, adjust both valves of cylinder 2
As cylinder 3 exhaust valve closes and inlet just starts to open, adjust both valves of cylinder 4
As cylinder 6 exhaust valve closes and inlet just starts to open, adjust both valves of cylinder 1
As cylinder 2 exhaust valve closes and inlet just starts to open, adjust both valves of cylinder 5
As cylinder 4 exhaust valve closes and inlet just starts to open, adjust both valves of cylinder 3

Hi plum, i started on cylinder 6 exhaust valve closes and inlet just starts to open, adjust both valves of cylinder 1.

The rest i done in order.

Does that matter?

On the video, the loose rocker is correct cyl1? I.e. there was a gap to put the feeler gauge. Or should i of adjusted ones that were solid with no movement cyl6?

I understand it all. Just making sure i understand the on the rocks term

The guide i used, hence i adjusted 1 first, not 6 :/

using the rocker method I usually start at #1 valve adjustment since the firing order on all inline 6 engines is 1 5 3 6 2 4. To get to the #1 cylinder valve adjustment bar the engine over and watch the valves at cylinder #6. You will see the exhaust valve closing…… just when it’s totally closed the intake valve will JUST start to open (commonly known as valve overlap). This indicates that both #1 and #6 pistons are at TDC but #1 cylinder intake and exhaust valves are on the compression stroke and ready for adjustment while #6 cylinder is on the exhaust stroke

Glad my earlier post on valve adjusting is proving useful. It doesn't matter which end of the engine you start as long as the valves are in the correct position. The cylinder to adjust should have a gap on both valves, if only one has a gap check that you are on the correct cylinder, if there is no gap (solid) then the valves are on the cam lobes and are not to be adjusted. This sequence works for all Volvo 6 cylinder engines with manual valve adjustment, the newer D3,4,6 have hydraulic valves so no adjustment required.
The KAD 44/300 which have a 24 valve head have an extra adjustment procedure which I will post if anyone wants it.

I think the wise spannerman just answered your question below. Looks like your are all set to crank!

Brilliant.. 100% confident now i got it right. As using the guide, it makes it easy.

P.s. rocker arm was removed for a HG install.

Does this affect clearences when reinstalled? Strange how they were all out.. although its a 16 year old engine, with poor maintenance history.

I assume they were out of adjustment before you changed the head gasket?
