I got an email from a bloke asking about sub £150 cameras to record his big adventure

he asked me to take a look at his new world girdling yacht and tell him what I think of her

I know a couple of people who did serious blue water sailing in ferro boats, but that was a long time ago.
53ft is a good size.
I'd prefer GRP, but a good ferro boat might be better than a tired steel one.

I had a 38ft endurance built in Wroxham by windboats who also build oysters.. The hull was heavy and id not hesitate to sail anywhere in it.

I gather that the strength of a ferro boat is dependent on the quality of the build, which can be difficult to tell from the outside of the hull - which makes them risky purchases.

I have also assumed - but don't know for certain - that ferro is heavier than GRP and so a ferro boat will have less ballast , and therefore less stability, than a GRP boat of the same displacement. Combined with that keel shape it may not be a particularly stiff boat.

I would also suggest fitting a mast :)

But the lines are pretty and could make a good cruising boat

Exactly. We come across ferro cruisers regularly. Solid sound seaworthy boats...............until they hit something solid.

Is this boat ferro or fibre reinforced cement. There were several built that I know of using fibreglass within the cement - don'know if these had ferro in them as well. The one I was involved with I took down to Penzance in 2007/8 and was schooner rigged. Couldn't test sailing ability as shorthanded with seasick crew. Very similar keel shape. On arriving in Penzance we lay alongside similar sized motor boat made of the same stuff. Last heard it had been sold to Scandinavian.

The 'single-handed round the world non-stop monohull record', was held for a while by Peter Freeman, he did it in a home-built ferrocement 'Hartley 32'.

Who is he and when was that?

I would guess a long while back before the giant skimming dish type yachts came along, they have been with us a while now.

Is this going to kick off a ferro slagging session again?

Lots of yachts of all sorts of materials have come to grief after hitting something solid.

The only thing new that I have to add, is the observation that in Australia, the price of used yachts has plummeted.

Prices for ferro vessels have stayed much the same, so now there are lots of steel, and some GRP yachts, that are cheaper than ferro.

I hope not. Wasn't my intention. Just to mention I recently saw the impact damage on a ferro boat that hit a
large steel hand-buoy & sank within minutes. The damage was considerably more that you would expect on a steel or plastic boat. No chance of taking any action to save the boat.

I am always a bit wary when a nube buys a massive ferro project boat

53 feet is massive ...... and there is so much work to do and money to throw at it

the bloke had set himslef until august the 1st to complete the job

one year in and he he still has some way to go

Yes, they are sticking their neck out. Yet some people manage to do it.

I know I am not the sort of person who could do it. I don't know if I could have become that sort of person if I had started earlier, and made enough success of my life, (oh all right money) before I started, to make it possible.

There is another thread about peeps selling their completed restoration soon after completion, because they want a different type.

Will it be another restoration? At least they now know, or have a good idea, what they can manage.

Good luck to all project guys!!

I was on one today. Around 30 yrs old with no problems, except the owner accepts it is worth very little. He has cruised it all along the med for over ten years and is now gently edging back to UK. Insurance Cos don't like them and that is a major stumbling block as one needs basic insurance.
Another friend built and sailed his for some time. But, while he did all the ferro and had a surveyor look at it at stages, he had the plastering done by a professional crew as it needs to be done in one shot. Both the above boats were very fair and could be mistaken for GRP. The hull thickness on the latter was around 20mm at the topsides and much of the lower hull.

My fault. He was going to buy a GoPro and I linked him to your website article on cameras and techniques.
Be kind to him I reckon he is a top bloke who is doing a grand job rescuing this boat.

my fingers are crossed for him

seen too many dreams smashed against concrete hulls

he is currently filming on an iphone

which is better than any £150 camera
