Well, hmmmmmm, thinking of taking 5 weeks of work, well in 06 anyway.
So where should i take my boat? How far could i go? Say if i could average 6knots.

Spain looks could, but would i have enough time?
What would you do?

How about a proper exploration of Brittany? Head to the sunny penisular of Quiberion, go to Belle-lle-en-Mer, check out the ocean racing yachts in La Trinite-sur-Mer and visit Vannes in the Golf du Morbihan, and clock double figures with the tides!

Apart from all that fab sailing, think of the wine, the seafood! Actually why wait till next year /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Come over my way ..... Baltic .... I can help you with berthing Ventspils, Liepaja - then round at Tallinn ..... ???

In 06 ..... might even be able to do it in company - as I want to sail my tub round to here ..... from Solent !!

Re: 5 Weeks off work....

5 weeks sounds a lot, especially to those who can only get 2 weeks at a time! However the reality has to include getting back as well as going, so 2 weeks is really where you can get in 1 week and 5 weeks is where you can get to in 2.5 weeks.

We are fortunate to be 5 weekers every year pretty well and we chose Southern Brittany as someone has already mentioned, doing a quick get there in 5 days, a 3 week local lazy cruise and a 10 day easy stages return. In our case it has to be August and we have thought long and hard about Spain for a change. However there IS still a deadline return date and I know if a settled period came earlier I would be wanting to leave for home ' just in case', thus cutting short a visit I would prefer to have taken time over. Also for us in August the prevailing Biscay winds are actually between NW and NE which would give a probable 500 mile beat, not my favourite on the way home!

Re: 5 Weeks off work....

I should stop encouraging people to go to S Brittany - but I'm going to agree with those who have already nominated it. South Brittany is a wonderful cruising ground where the weather is nearly always more reliable and better than the Channel. Once past Pointe Penmarche (or however its spelled) you are into some idyllic cruising waters.

We've spent the last couple of summers down there and will be leaving for S of the Ras du Seine again on 29 July this year (Hurrah 4 weeks to go!!)

This year we are intending to get a little further South, but we have cheated and persuaded a friend to fly out and bring the boat back from La Rochelle. Why not plan a similar trip? 5 weeks sounds a lot, but as you start relaxing into cruising, the time flies by. This is why we try to lengthen the actual cruise by delivering early, or getting a friend to do one leg.

Another time we want to get down to Spain, but the plans are to leave the boat in France for a season, and we will probably do N Spain again then.

/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Oops, sorry; Southern Brittany, terrible place! Forget everything I said.

John

The secret has been out too long!

We will leave Poole 29th or poss 28th July overnight for Dartmouth then to Camaret so will be around and about the same times as you. Our route is usually Dartmouth/Camaret/Benodet OR Glenans/Houat. After that these days we mostly play in and around Quiberon Bay especially the outside Islands and go back north in time for the Fetes Des Filets Bleues Fireworks in Concarneau, this year on 21st August. Then it's Glenans/Morgat/L'Aberwrac'h/Perros or Trebeurden/St Peter Port/home, all predictably boringly delightful.

Yeehaaaaa!

Re: 5 Weeks off work....

I like the sound of this, i might try and fit my yacht out for a year out, maybe never return who knows.
Might speak to stingo and get some tips.

What about around Britain?

Make it a quick sail up the East coast then through the Caledonian Canal and into the Western Isles for a couple of weeks before heading back down past Ireland, West country etc. One of the best trips we ever did.

If the weather looks good, Northern Spain, then via La Rochelle, Brittany and home.

5 days to Spain, two weeks cruising there, two weeks Brittany and two days home? or if you get stuck leave the boat and fly home, its a good excuse for an extra holiday.

S.Brittany

I am thinking of buying a boat that is curently in the Golf du Morbihan.
How long would everyne expect ,on average ,to sail back to the Solent?

I have 5 weeks each summer - it soon passes and its amazing how a bum summer can rein in your mileage. Don't be too ambitious and try to avoid turning it into a race.

5 weeks of work isnt a lot so how far you can go afterwards depends on how well you are paid. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
