News reports suggest that the EA is facing 15% cuts during the next 12 months likely to impact significantly on jobs.
The Environment Agency is to cut its staffing levels by 15% by next October, according to a statement given to ENDS.
The body is facing a far bigger cut in funding from DEFRA than previously expected, and as a result is having to drop staff from its current 11,400 to 9,700 by October 2014.
The fact the flood defence budget is protected appears to be impacting on staffing levels.

Lots of reports on the local BBC TV about lock refurbishments, a few pictures of Osney shown. Reported the EA spending 3million this year instead of the usual 5-6million due to cuts.

Bear in mind this is current year expenditure (2013/14) and largely capital budget rather than revenue. The latest announcements refer to the period from now until late 2014.
The EA are always unable to plan fully for the boating season as they are not usually made aware of how much money is available to them until after the season has already started! Recruitment of Summer Assistants, for instance cannot be pursued before the season starts as they do not know if they will be able to pay for them!

Incidentally, I see the ATYC are stating that the increase in licence fees for next year of 4.8% has now been confirmed.

So, on the one hand money is tight, budgets have to be cut so EA funding is to be reduced.
On the other hand the government has just blown £400M + on a completely flawed IT project for Universal Credit.

Yeah, that figures.

We appear to have hindsight Government by select committee at the moment. Foresight seems to be the preserve of the informed public users.:mad:

The EA are more than capable of blowing what little money they have without assistance.

The flood defence scheme in Gloucestershire that kept floodwater IN the village springs to mind...
