Probably wont get round to it, but was toying with the idea of pumping this up for a little jaunt. So...
-is there a web page of rules and regs that I need to read ?
-is there a fave spot for a few hours pootling about that doesnt involve lots of locks, but has a waterside pub for a snifter?
-and I need somewhere to launch, preferably more than a river bank!
I m in London, but if I need to go an hour or so outside, thats ok (westwards, I mean!)

If you launch at River Lane in Petersham (has a slipway & parking) you can go either downriver to Richmond or upriver to Twickenham (Eel Pie Island & Barmy Arms) or continue to Teddington (Anglers Hotel).

This area is all half tidal and comes under PLA so no licence fee.

If you go through Teddington Lock then Howard or one of his colleagues will sell you a day ticket for the Non-tidal (EA run) Thames. You can then visit Kingston & Hampton Court.

Square metreage ( is that a word ? ) of your boat , so say , 4 x 2 = 8 sq/m = £11.50.

You also get the second day for free , so if you came up on a Saturday morning , you could stay on the river until Sunday night. This would use two of your allowed days though ( out of total 67 in any one year ) ..

See you soon.

crikey, its all a bit complex up on the river !
No wonder the powers that be want to make things more complex on the coast !
I guess there is some speed limit too?

YUP! and just to be thoroughly stupid the powers that be set it in KPH instead of Knots (despite being warned beforehand). To further add to their idiocy they put signs on all the Locks saying the Speed Limit was "8k". They then had to pay to have every lock sign changed to read as "8 kph" because, naturally, everyone read the original signs as Knots.

And of course if he's going on the bit below Teddington its an 8k speed limit, or should that be 8nmph ;-)
or 14.816kph!

All the complication (and cost) of going onto the Non-tidal is why I suggest launching at Petersham & doing Twickenham & Teddington for a day. Plenty to see at no cost.

This stretch of river is the famous "View from Richmond Hill",

For culture vultures you can visit Ham House and Marble Hill.

(Mind you, Teddington Lock is where Monty Python filmed the fish slapping dance....)

Yep ... i'll be here .... late shift till 10 !

;)

Thats great 8k** at each end!!? Its almost as barmy as Ireland, where the speed limits are in miles per hour and the road distances are in Kilometers.

Republic of Ireland, now has speed limits in Km/h and most of the road signs in Km (some very old rural black and white ones are still miles)

Northern Ireland, has speed limits and road signs in miles.

Hope that helps
