on the subject of bowthrusters - if you start cycling with stabiliser wheels, does it mean you have to use them forever?

Another forumite who was berthed across the fairway from me in Royal Clarence a few years ago had a bowthruster which he invariably used a blast of for take offs and landings even in benign conditions. His boat handling always appeared to be enviably precise, graceful and fuss free even in conditions where I'd be stressing about complicated arrangements of lines.

If you have an additional set of boat controls which you know how to use to good effect effect why on earth wouldn't you use them whenever they would help you make a better job of your task?

Up to a year ago I had a berth opposite to the entry of a second marina with a 90° turn leading to the fairway and the common entrance.

Very often I would be disturbed by the grinding roar of bow-thrusters being used by large motor yachts to make the turn coming out of the ancillary marina. The fact that not all of such similar vessels needed to use their undoubtedly-fitted bow-thrusters, proved it could be done without.

The result was that over a short time a ridge of sediment stirred up by the bow-thrusters built up and hemmed in my own boat requiring expensive dredging at frequent intervals to keep my berth and the adjacent fairway clear.
