I agree with Wayne. On the basis of they will have all read a book about starting and will try for the favoured end of the line, that is where the mayhem will be. If as usual the wind is from the southwest, and remembering the tide runs along the Green first, that is where most people will concentrate. If you go between a half and two thirds of the way out you can come in on starboard for a long way before you have to tack and if you have good boat speed and strong nerves you should be able to get across most of them as they will be short tacking.
Good luck, I am spending the day in the declaration office.
It'll be like the opening scene in Gladiator - 40 Sun Fast 37s playing the part of the ruthless Roman Legions lined up, ready for the slaughter.
If you hear the words "at my command, unleash hell" - don't wait, just get going !! I'm sure no one will notice if you're a couple of minutes early over the line.
I think a leisurely start is called for - after all in a 9 hour race the odd couple of minutes won't make much difference, and you'll have the fun of overtaking the Sunsail boats one-by-one
You're right. There are some where between 250 and 300 baots lined up for the 9:20 start and I, for one, will not be that bothered if I'm a minute or two late over the line but still have my boat intact.
keep listening on the VHF16 and lets find out how many call for the SAR or an ambulance because another one of the crew out for a jolly has been hit by the boom!!!! they used to make my blood run cold, if i saw them coming i used to head for a sandbar ( i only draw 32 inches) and sit over it until they had gone, yeah i can appreciate your concerns, its like a hire car its not theirs so lets thrash it to death!!!! i think there may well be some good advice being offered, start behind them and pick them off one by one.... less stress, more fun
once led six sigma 33s onto the bramble bank, they were racing and i just kept going in a straight line onto the bank assuming that being local boats they knew where the bank was, i just stood there and watched them keep coming i could not believe my eyes, and then there they went, bang, bang , bang bang, the guys close behind did some real fast tacks, i could not believe that they would follow a multi into thin water........... but i was wrong, anyway all refloated with the tide cheers keith
Don't assume that Sunsail boats are only helmed by the inexperienced and/or yobbos. I did a corporate race event with Sunsail about 6 years ago and competed against some extremely competent sailors.
If twere me, I would make a committee boat start, even if it is port biassed, and aim to be just behind the first rank - straight onto the favoured tack, then, after tacking onto starboard, I'll bet we never cross behind another boat.
