Wow, a happy ending! So far, anyway. Two effortless pumps of the little riveter's big brass extension handles, and the monel 4.8mm rivet crushed neatly and popped like it should...

...and I even remembered to add a dollop of Duralac. I now see why monel is recommended over other rivets...the adjacent, old one looks like melted ice cream by comparison.
All in all, I'm only regretful about buying the lazy-tongue riveter, since it hasn't yet worked nearly as consistently as my modified pliers-type. Of course, now I'll have to buy a tin of Brasso to maintain the extension-handles.
