4.3 knots or speed through the water ?

Never really understood what this obsession some peeps have with the speed limit being SOG, yes it is flawed but speed through the water is unenforcable so you have to have something measurable that you can then assess in combination with wash etc... to determine if a prosecution is required. I can't see the EA bothering to prosecute anybody for doing 5knts downstream
making no wash, but 8 knts yes regardless of direction. In the current conditions if just you cast off and are at tickover you will be doing 8knts downsteam but I think that is missing the point.
There are bigger issues on the river to worry about.

In fact SOG is easy... Use a GPS. No problems with bunged up paddle wheels. Also easier for enforcement..Radar guns or time between locks both work for speed over ground. Unfortunately EA don't have the staff to do this to any realistic intent.

But SOG is not relevant to wash, which is arguably the biggest issue. SOG of 4kts going upstream today is likely to be around 8kts TTW, which would create unacceptable wash.

Nothing new here folks, move along.....:p

As well as the speed limit, Boat owners are invited not to cause excess wash anyway, so thats covered too. Can't see any reason to discuss this yet again....sigh :)

My reason for posting was that it seemed that a case was being made for using speed through the water as opposed to SOG. Although this is fine related to trying to control wash levels I agree with Chris_d that it would be very difficult to monitor.
