Hey Gang
Whilst diagosing my starting problems I noticed that after shimming the No.3 cylinder to the injection mark that the other two cylinders didn't line up with theirs. No. 1, out by 4 Ish and No. 2 by about 6 degrees. Any ideas as to whether this would cause the reluctance in firing up.
I've done the other stuff. Dowty seals to repair a weeping leak, reground the valves, replaced the head gasket because of a small blow, changed the filters and housings because of leakage. Carried out the crushed solder measurement check of the cylinders. Had the injectors checked. Replaced the starter motor. Flushed the old fuel out. There doesn't appear to be too much presure in the crankcase. No oil ejected or used and no smoke in the exhaust. I would have carried out a compression test but the E bay seller sent me a Garden Chair instead of the tester. To a blind man they probably look the same. I suppose I could have used it to sit on whilst I tried to work the problem out.

Timing should be within 1 degree

All three cylinders should line up to within 1 degree. If one is ok and the others are still out the most likely culprit is you fuel pump-need servicing and resetting.

Thanks for the reply
I felt getting the pump serviced was the option to go for but wasn't sure if this was the the cause of the starting problem. Marine Power's advicewhen setting up the injection timing was that the timing should be within "a line" of the timing mark. So your 1 degree of latitude across the pump is spot on. The shims only allow for certain permutaions and then you run out of shim sizes. I suppose I could make up a shim from gasket papaer or aluminium foil. Tell you what though, the high pressure pump is bloody expensive for a bit of machined metal casting and the integrals

You do NOT need a new pump......Take it to a diesel shop and get it calibrated, A fraction of the cost of a pump..
