After doing a bit of research on here I thought I'd got the right bit of kit (TP-Link MR3020) but although it is compatible with my Cosmote Huawei E173 dongle it appears the MR3020 is not compatible with Cosmote, or any other mobile service provider in Greece. I've mailed the Technical help guys at TP-Link but not had a reply.

So... has anyone got an MR3020 to work in Greece and if you have, how did you do it??

Or.. What other options seem to work in Greece? My Cosmote dongle works great plugged into my laptop but SWMBO is missing her wifi only ipad so I need to share the internet conection.

One last plea - please keep answers not too technical!

Thanks in advance

Nigel,
I had a look at your link but way too technical for me!

If it can be made to work I would have thought TP would have managed to get the APN settings from Cosmote and they would be available on the TP website.... or maybe I'm being naive.

I was in the Cosmote shop in Preveza the other day to top up my dongle and noticed they were selling Cosmote badged MiFi dongles for about 88 euro's so I could possibly but one of these and off-load the TP-Link junk on Ebay.

Cosmote's APN is usually 'internet', user and password blank. I don't know if that's what you need though.

Thanks but the TP system requires me to select a country from a dropdown list before I can enter the APN and Greece is not listed.

The TP thingy will also operate in WISP and AP modes but I don't now what they are - I've been trying to configure the thing to share my computer internet connection and re-transmit the connection via wifi but no luck so far.

The user manual suggests that you should enter the APN manually if your location is not listed. Select any European country and operator then override the APN. You don't want WISP or AP modes. Leave all the dial codes as default.

There's nothing special about Cosmote or Greece. It should work, unless the dongle is configured to require special PC software. Some are.

Dave,
The APN is greyed out and the only way I can see to enter the APN is to download a bin file from TL but when I looked there were no bin files available for the MR3020.

Thanks all but I'll give up and buy a Cosmote MiFi dongle, the only way I can get the TL device to work is for their tech guys to perform and that's not going to happen.

If the thing was a decent weight I'd use it as a kedge.

We use a 3G dongle in our laptop and use Connectify (connectify.me)to connect our other laptop, ipads and phone using wifi. You need the Pro version to connect to 3G but all works well for us.

Connectify - ad-hoc networks

Hi,
I was warned off Connectify as a non-techy it would be difficult to set up. Instead because my laptop is window7 advice was I could set up an ad-hoc network to link in the ipad. I tried this and the ipad can connect OK to the laptop but the ad-hoc connection on the laptop shows no internet access (when the Cosmote system is working OK and the laptop is connected to the internet.

I think I'm doomed when it comes to technology as the Ipad now has just refused to connect to my Garmin bluetooth GPS although it worked fine all last night during a very windy night in Vlicho (I used the Navionics app to see how much we were dragging)

From memory, the connectify setup was fairly straight forward, the only issue I had was that I had to get my firewall / anti virus software to allow connectify to access the internet.

I have the MR3020 working with a Vodafone Greece Pay as You Go SIM.

First, make sure that any PIN has been disabled on the SIM card. I did this with the SIM card in the dongle plugged directly in to my laptop.

Then in the router configuration page Network - 3G, click the Advanced Settings button at the bottom of the page. In the Advanced Settings page set the APN to "web.session" (without the quotes). The Dial number will default to *99# and the user name and password should be left blank.

So far I have not been able to persuade the MR3020 to work with a WIND Greece PAYG SIM.

For the TP-Link MR3020 with a Wind PAYG data SIM in Greece you will need to set the APN to "gint.b-online.gr" (without the quotes). Do this by going to the router configuration page Network - 3G and then clicking the Advanced Settings button. On the Advanced settings page, tick that you want to set the dial number and APN manually. The dial number will default to *99# which is correct. For the APN enter "gint.b-online.gr" (without the quotes). Leave the username and password blank.

Good luck

I know it is a while since the original posters question, but this thread helped me get my MR-3020 working in Greece with Cosmote prepaid internet SIM, so here are the steps I took. They might not all be necessary, but this worked for me:

- Remove the PIN from the SIM card - I did this by plugging the USB dongle in to my laptop and using the software that came with my USB dongle to disable the PIN on the SIM card.
- Configure the MR-3020 for Cosmote - you just need to set the APN to "internet" and make username and password empty:
- log in to the MR-3020
- select Network>3g/4G
- pick any Location/country from the drop down list
- pick any Mobile/ISP from the drop down list (you are going to reconfigure this country/isp, so don't pick one you want to use later)
- click on "Advanced Settings" at the bottom of the page
- on the Advanced Settings page, select the check box for "Set the Dial Number, APN, Username and Password manually"
- make sure the Dial Number is *99#
- set the APN to "internet"
- delete anything in the Username field
- delete anything in the Password field
- click Save

It should then work.

Mark.
