3G Data Roaming with three?

Re: 3G Roaming with three?

I have the 3 data sim - with 20GB NOT all you can eat - which was not mentioned in their T&Cs so I reasonably assumed I could use all 20 GB in Spain - yesterday I got a warning text that I had used 80% of my 12GB allowed in at home countries. Obviously they make no mention of this anywhere on their site - they only say all you can eat is limited - but the defined packages are too and my calls fell upon deaf ears when I complained today.
I would note I bought this SIM just 2 weeks ago and its not on an archaic package - so for certain you cannot use more than 12GB overseas with 3 and not for more than 2 FULL months (I have been using my phone in France and Spain for 2 years now by just turning it off 1 day every months so it never registers a full month abroad and I have had no problems so far)

I think it's because the data on those SIMs are regarded as an add-on. You usually buy them pre-loaded with so-much data which lasts so-many months, and after that you can buy more data as an add-on. So it's limited to 12GB under the Ts&Cs: http://www.three.co.uk/terms-conditions/feel-at-home

"In any case, in the event the customer’s plan includes all-you-can-eat data and/or an add-on with additional data, voice or SMS the following limits per month shall apply: Data: 12GB"

It looks as if they don't distinguish between the data initially loaded and any subsequent add-on - the regard both as 'additional'.

Re: 3G Roaming with three?

Ah I see the problem, you're all talking about PAYG or month by month plan sim's, I took out a 12 month contract sim and the T&C's are different.

have you got a link to the specific T&C's?

I am on pay monthly one month contract and as far as I see all contracts are the same as far as feel at home is conccerned

Voting pro EU may get rid of this by next year

If only..
Unfortunately the EU rolled over & has allowed the telcos to include a "fair use policy".

I think most deals will start including the dreaded "must use in the uk every 30 days" or similar come June 2017.

So far EE have it in their current contracts, Even Vodafones expensive £3/day is limited to 30days. 3 as we know is 2 months, though i did see a web page where it said 3mths. All bad if you spend say 4 mths in the EU.

I shall stay with my over 2 year old EE contract as it doesn't have the 30 day issue & they seem to allow you to stay on the original contract. I use a local data sim in a mifi for data.

Yes, I think you'll fall foul of this. I had a similar problem. But try it - the restriction works by checking the IMEI and the E220 is quite old so may not be on their database. You could do what I do - use an old mobile phone and tether with bluetooth or cable - they don't detect that.

Oh yes they do, and they cut you off automatically after they find out.

Mine is a 12 month post pay contract not the add on PAYG version...

Re: 3G Roaming with three?

I just spoke to a company that offers the following

50GB for $395 (they supply the SIM and all the support to get you up and running) It is an any EU country SIM
250GB for $550

A business suggestion I think for any live aboard in a very busy area. You could market yourself as an "un-official" internet café and sell 1GB for £5 with a Nepsresso Latte :-) 100GB sold and you will be wagging your 4G tail

I think I might just buy a yacht move to Hvar and retire :-)

Re: 3G Roaming with three?

So who are they? At around £1.50 per GB for the 250GB package that is a very good deal for heavy users like us - we are working online as we cruise... Is there a time limit on use ? Any details would be helpful

Re: 3G Roaming with three?

How would they know if you are using tethering?
It depends on the phone. Modern smartphones - iOS, Android - tell the operator, or perhaps ask if tethering is allowed. Old phones don't. I was tethering last week in France using an old Nokia on a 3 PAYG tarriff - which does not allow tethering. 4.3p/Mb, so not cheap, but convenient. And I remember when it cost £5.Mb.
If they wanted they could tell by sniffing the traffic - a Symbian phone cannot run Firefox for Android - but in practice they don't. Too few of us ;)

Re: 3G Roaming with three?

Two issues, I think. Three SIMs are either for phones or for tablets/dongles/mifis and they have started enforcing this. I had a Three PAYG SIM in my tablet which worked fine for a year and then stopped and had to be replaced with a data SIM.

Although tethering is not allowed on my phone contract, I have had no problem in getting it to work, either wirelessly or over USB. However, that was connecting to the Android tablet or Ubuntu linux laptops. It refuses to work with Windows or Mac laptops, so I suspect it's sniffing the user agent string of the browser and getting umpty if it detects something it thinks runs on a computer.

I plan to buy one of their £30 for 12GB for 12 months PAYG data SIMs for the boat's mifi, which should see me through the summer.

Ditto. The PAYG SIM that I mentioned in my last post worked fine in my Android tablet but now doesn't - hence I tether it to the Nokia. Three keep changing the way their SIMs work. My wife bought a data SIM for her iThing which would work either with or without an add-on - i.e. she could use data by the Mbyte from ££ credit. Now she can't - she has to buy a month's data.
