Finally joined the 21st century and got myself a phone that will give me t'internet on 3G and wifi.
Hoping to use it for forecasts when we come down for the annual East Coast trip.

Can anyone tell me if I will get much in the way of 3G in the Orwell/Harwich/Stour area? (and possibly Southwold/Deben/Ore)

Many thanks,
Jon

We get good 3G coverage on Vodafone all around that area.
There are also a few free wifi spots and, if you moor at the various marinas, there are wifi services (of varying degrees of quality) available to visitors.

the 3 network is ok for me

SWMBO got a 3 contract on her iPhone that acts as a wifi hotspot to power our love of Netflix on the iPad. After three years on the East Coast in Lazy Kipper we've never once failed to have enough signal to watch whatever box set we're on. From the wilds of a Butley Creek to the flesh pots of Wrabness and the bustling anchorage at Osea Island. On a very boring passage last summer I used it to watch a couple of Top Gear specials whilst crossing the Thames a Estuary. Getting the phone up high is the key and a wheelhouse helps. Helps most things of course ;)

Strange we got almost no signal on 3 in the Butley river or nearby at Orford. Most other places fine.

We've never tried it in the river, only the creek. Height makes a huge difference, LK sits high out if the water and the wheelhouse roof is probably about 12 feet above the water line, we put the phone up there and it always gets enough signal.

In our hut at Wrabness - mostly above the tide level - O2 signal varies tremendously. Presumably on a mooring the tide height would make an appreciable difference, even with your wheelhouse?

Yes, we get degraded signal sometimes at LW. But the top of LK's wheelhouse is about 11 feet above the waterline so that makes a big difference.
