In my quest to find a good Princess V42 Open I was advised not to go for the more powerful, more modern D6 engines as they said they're heavier and ultimately slower than a boat equipped with KAD 300's. If that's true I can see the logic but my initial thought was newer must be better, but perhaps not?

Anyone know the respective weights of these 2 set-ups inc' outdrives?

I guess it may well of been discussed before but I can't find anything, what are the pro's and con's of these two options.

Weight vs. Power / Torque vs. Fuel efficiency vs. Servicing Cost ..... etc.

Thanks.

When thinking of a next boat I come to this similar equation if I will stay with stern drive.
Something I probably want do.

For torque there is comparison D6 is 5.5 liter Kad300 is 3.5 liter.
D6 also revs less max 3600 and KAD300 revs at 4000k.

D6 stern drives is not so good, Kad300 stern drive is better.

If boat can do 33/34 knots max with KAD300 I would go for them, that means you can cruise comfortably while not stressing them much at about 3000 rpm (24-25 knots).
If these nos come out in sea trails I would go for KAD300.

No first-hand experience of the V42, but with the similar-sized Targa 40, a D6 boat is both quicker and more frugal than a KAD300 boat.

D6 will be less smoky, cleaner, bigger 5.5 litre block so less stressed generally. DPH Drive is quite chunky, although equally as expensive if things do go wrong.
KAD300 requires valve clearances to be adjusted regularly. Also these engines are starting to get old, so parts will eventually get harder to source, and it was stretching what was possible with the 3.6 litre block.

At least with a D6 you are "current generation".

Not a D6 owner; just a D4 -300 owner.

There are some peripherals on the outdrive that seem to have been designed by "engineers" with no knowledge at all about polymers,/ corrosion. A stupid "plastic " elbow in the cooling system that fails due to fatigue whereas an aluminium one, protected by the anodes would last for ever.
