Of more serious concern I have read is the increasing prevalence of much smaller but very steep freak waves in shallow costal areas, thought to be caused by ferries etc a long way out but at excessive speed. There have been cases of dinghies suddenly swamped by a 10 foot wave that came seemingly from nowhere, or people cockle-picking in calm water suddenly being inundated.
