300HP really ?

Apart from the usual AdHom.... I tested a 22ft Rib with a 150hp diesel Yamaha outdrive. Managed 35kts flat out. I didn't realise that it was destined for the 'trade' out of Morroco..
 
In my early 20's way back when, an old school friend had a Ring 20 with a 275 Johnson outboard on the back for ski racing......it would pull a single skier at approx 70mph. It was exceedingly uncomfortable and horrifically expensive but very exciting; I've never been in a power boat since. I guess if your object is speed why limit the power? There were similar boats on the ski racing circuit with twin 275's and that was the early 80's so heaven knows what you could have now.
 
I have a 22'0" mako centre console wit 2 x 85hp outboards.

It can plane with 8 aboard and cruise at 20 -22 knots at 3,750 revs.

I have n need togo faster.

Why two engines ?
I am in Caribbean.
If one engine goes then I can get home (not planing) on the other.
If it only had one engine and it broke down there is no 'Quickstart' to call or the RNLI.
There is a 'coastguard' which might come out if you are lucky.

A few years ago, I had a single engined 18 footer and hit an awash/submerged log.
Started sinking not to far off shore, so made a Pna Pan call.
NOBODY responded ! ! !
Managed to make it to shore with water coming in the hole flowing through the boat and out over the transom.

Next stop could be several days drifting away.
 
My boat has been out plenty, last I counted was 24 cross Channels and out in a F11.

My health has decreed a year off, and if you're capitalising on that you're the poisonous person you do so much to appear as - Goodbye.

Talk about the past a lot don't you? Fortunately I haven't been daft enough to get caught out in a F11 though..

You don't actually have a particularly broad knowledge of boats if you think that 'hanging on' is the only skill needed for helming fast RIBs, probably best you don't ever go out in one unless you have someone competent in boat handling with you...

If you actually read them, you will find that it is a response to personalised vitriol - as in this case too... Observations based on limited experience are often unsound, maybe you should have a read back through some people's posting styles if you want to make more informed observations.
 
Oh dear, what a lot of sensitive souls and egos.

Incidentally, I have a 8m sportsboat with a 320 hp engine ; it'll only do about 40 knots flat out . As it has a duoprop drive, it'll never circle around if I'm stupid enough to not use the killcord and fall overboard; it'll carry on running in a straight line until it runs out of fuel.
 
From what people are saying about engines here, there seems to be a huge law of diminishing returns involved with fitting larger, more powerful and presumably heavier engines to ribs.

well said. I did a lot of learning in the week on the 800hp RIB. I was the instructor........
 
Of course; if it had a full tank maybe and was travelling at 30 knots or so, maybe as far as 150 miles away. But there again., whilst I'm clearly stupid not to use free sail power rather than buy petrol (how much does a set of sails cost for a high speed yacht, by the way?) I'm not stupid enough to not use the killcord.

Glad to hear it, neither am I in my albeit smaller RIB or even smaller tender. I wouldn't come on the sailing forum saying I was stupid because I buy petrol instead of sails though, people might think I had a chip on my shoulder. I buy sails and petrol, would that make me twice as stupid? And I buy diesel too. Costly business this boating lark isn't it?
