as per the MiToS rebuilt thread, I'm looking for a 300-400mm round deck hatch to fit in my craft. It's a timber hull and overstructure, it's going to be fitted on plywood covered with teak veneer (5-6mm thick)

I'm doing the preparations for the removal of the old teak/ply/linoleum like finish and would be nice to have the hatch or know it's exact size to calculate placement of trusses under the ply.

I know, worse comes to worse, I replace with the ply, and once I source the hatch I drill the right size hole but wouldn't mind doing it the proper way...

ATM I have a very very tired 600mm + hatch that is too big, falling apart and imho unserviceable, hence the need for a new one. I've seen some really shocking prices (Gebo and goiot), so something decent and reasonably priced would be lovely. Obviously cannot be white plastic as the surroundings will be teak, an alloy or ss would be what I need.
Finally being in the med, an integrated shading and mosquito net is a must.

cheers

thanks jfm,

indeed not a place for a cheapo thing, but I doubt I'll be happy spending more than 300euros on that thing.
I mean, the redesigned main bow cabin for me and the wife has 4 round windows one port, 3 stbrd (255mm internal dia each). Considering I'll be relaying all ply and teak and fitting 50 or 80mm good quality dow insulation underneath between the 20X80 support beams, do I really need this 400mm vent hatch or it's just an extra hassle? I'm considering the hatch for ventilation only, not interested on the extra light coming in the room as most of the time I'll be sleeping inthere and I don't want lots of light for that...

Yes, I know the answer is try first without, if you boil and the air-con is not enough, fit one next year... I may have to do so, or fit a vent hatch and be done with, but they are mostly square and I don't like their looks from the deck.

we shall see.

I would go to C-Quip, they only sell really good stuff - non of that rubbish plastic. Bomar is one of the best marks out there

Regards

some people want that hatch as emergency exit (?)

In our Karnic, this hatch is covered with a custome made bow cushion.
We have spend quite a few nights in the cabin below, and didn't miss the hatch.
we use the side windows for ventilation.

you absolutely need it as escape hatch. if boat sinks stern first, or engne room fire, anyone in the front will think the e300 was money well spent!

escape hatch/sinking

jfm and Bart, I have to admit that the concept of stern first sinking and e/r fire hadn't even crossed my mind when I was designing the hatch position based on the actual twin berth layout.

Yes, since even wife's life costs more than 300euros , no discussion on that, means I have to design for 400mm minimum if you want to use it in emergency.

Will see what I find locally and in Athens before making a move for online purchase.

cheers

No connection with Coastalrides, just happened to be on that site this evening.

nice find wakeup!

the first link the Bomar round ss one is exactly what I'm looking for especially now that the experts recon I need an emergency exit!
Will email and ask for shipping to Greece and if there's a mosquito net and curtain for it.

cheers

hm, looked around locally (as in Athens) and an anodized white (not suitable) Bomar is 458euro for id of 420mm, whilst a Bofor again id 420mm is 370euro.

so waiting for a reply from coastalrides ;)

The only reasonable price I've found in marine products in Athens todate is the set of gaskets for my Lofrans windlass... (20euro!)

20 euro for something that costs <2 euro to produce,..... reasonable ?
but I accept high prices for spare parts, as the logistics and stock keeping of zillions of different parts costs a lot of money.

you are right, but if you think the marine markup on everything, this is still cheap just one blue note off your pocket :p
I'll check on the lofrans docs and see if the set of gaskets contains anything oddly shaped and specialised, else I'll skip that and match each one with custom stuff. The whole specialised market on gaskets and stuff in Volos is within two shops, you visit them and you're done (or order the set from Lofrans...)
Or I may get the laser cutter in the lab to do some work and cut them new (material is an issue though as I cannot cut rubber flanges on it)

I've only seen this thread now. A couple of comments:

1) if you have any difficulties with Lofrans parts, I live not far from their factory, and already dealt with them directly in the past. They've always been available also for minor requests.

2) re. the escape hatch over the bow cabin, I'm not saying that it doesn't make sense, of course.
But when you think about it, we're not talking of ships, where it could take minutes to leave an area which is being flooded or reached by fire.
I'm saying this because in my boat I don't have ANY escape hatch in the bow cabin. I did consider fitting one when I bought her, but aside from being unnecessary for ventilation, since there are 2 portholes on each side, it actually takes 3 (three!) seconds to go from the cabin to the helm side door. And maybe 4 to reach the cockpit door.
So, I decided that it's much more likely to be killed in a car crash, than finding myself in a situation which doesn't give me 3 seconds to escape...

Here, I said that.
Now all I have to do is fall quietly asleep the next time I'll be onboard, before being burnt at the stake of 30 tons of wood plus 4 tons of fuel...! :D

thanks MM, I'll open up the thing one of these days that the weather is **** and I cannot do any work on the boat and see what's happening.

Thanks for pointing the other side of the coin. I may adopt your approach as:
A. hatch doesn't really look good on my drawings
B. it's bl00dy expensive for a useless hatch
C. my boat is less than 10tons of timber ;)
D. I rarely will be carrying more than 1000lt of diesel :D

cheers

PS still waiting for coastalrides reply

LOL, well, if I really must be burnt at the stake, I'm not sure if a slow cook is really better than a big bang... :D
...though in practice I also never top up the whole 4T fuel capacity.
The last time I did was before leaving Croatia 6 years ago, 'cause fuel was cheaper there.
