3 Mifi - 15Mbps!!! ???

Just done a Speedtest.net test and it says I'm getting 15Mbps download, and 6Mbps upload.

Can this be correct?

If so, it's quite phenomenal for mobile broadband. I only get 9Mbps d/l and 0.6Mbps on Sky broadband, ( up to 20Mb), at home.

Yep if your serving base station is HSPA+ (whilst no-one else was caning it).

But I get 35 Mbps on my BT Infinity!

speedtest.net has occasionally reported my ordinary ADSL connection at over 60Mb/s.

Sadly it was always lying.

Usually the upload rate is about 10% of the download rate, as it is adsl.
The fact that you upload rate is 40% of the download rate means that it may be lying.

A better test, is to choose nice fat graphics file and download it from a remote server at home and time it. Do the same on the mobile. If the download time is faster on the mobile, then the rate is true

I don't think you can rely on either of those statements, and it will also vary significantly depending on your ISP.

My upload rate on my home (btinternet ADSL 8Mbps nominal) is consistent and capped at 0.380 Mbps. Typical download speed is 6Mbps (though being a Saturday evening is presently about 2.5Mbps due to contention).

On connections elsewhere I have actually seen the upload speed exceed the download at times. I suspect that the ADSL network gets a lot of blame for slow speed which really lies with slow servers at the other end.

My pet hate is the way 'distance from the exchange' is always trotted out as the reason when people complain of poor speed. Strange that it often works fine at 0300hrs in the morning!

It's not the cables.

It's the equipment installed at the exchange, how it is programmed and how many subscribers it serves.

I don't reckon the headline results of speed comparison tests are very meaningful. In judging performance so much depends on what each ISP is contracted to provide for each subscriber.

I reckon a better bar chart would be one that shows the average realised speed as a percentage of contracted speed.

Of course, they only ever promise "up to ....".

Home ADSL services are different to Business ones (generally), and at certain times of day (say 4pm to 6pm) you'll see significantly slower speeds as everyone 'shares' a connection.
