3 core shielded cable

Not sure why you need shielded cable, I understand that rudder reference is a resistance so not subject to interference, ours is and wired with tinned 3 core.

Dave is correct, there is no need for shielded cable.

28AWG is far too thin. I'd be looking for 0.5mm or 0.75mm, for robustness.

Thanks. The replacement unit is prewired with 1m of shielded cable because Raymarine specify it for the S2G course computer but the guy who makes them also says its not needed. I just thought I'd stick with the original spec "just in case" but will happily save the money given what you are saying. Any preferred suppliers?

It's always possible Raymarine specify the screened cable for a reason, even if it's not how I'd design the equipment.
It is possible that the screen is necessary, not for the equipment to work, but for it to pass EMC (interference) approval.
Outside of an EMC lab, it's probably easier to fit a screen than to wonder whether it makes a real life difference.

If you want to preserve the screening then you might find it easier to find a cable with more cores and an overall screen.
You could use a bit of ethernet cable or there are loads of sellers on ebay for various cables.
You shoud find something for under a tenner.

The rudder sensor is just a rheostat, it won't cause any EMC issues, unshielded cable is fine.

You could use ethernet cable, as long as it's stranded and tinned, it will work, but it's pretty thin, so would need some good support. Modern radar systems use ethernet, but the cables tend to be more robust.

12v Planet do tinned 3-core cable of various robust conductor areas and are not dear.
CEF do "Belkin equivalent" cables in many specifications for the emc aware but only to order at the branches. Finding the correct order code is an annoyance.
I was about to scoff at the idea that a potentiometer encoder cable might need screening but maybe if is connected directly to the microprocessor and runs at 3.3v it would. But surely they wouldn't be that A-level project about it................... could they?

I'm after an economical source of 10 metres of the following or as close to it as I can get. Happy to go up a gauge or two. This version only seems to come in 5m or 30m spools and there's so many suppliers and choice out there my eyes are glassing over!

Its a signal cable for a rudder reference unit. Any pointers?
I see you are in Southampton - I can supply you a 40' 3 core shielded with ground core 0.25mm2 we use for pressure transducers. PM me for details, but I might have one on my boat, or I can bring one home from my company later this week. FOC but would appreciate you make a contribution to Hamble Lifeboat, say £5
