Not being able to examine the perkins 4108 installed and about to start my rebuilt engine in the garage I would like to know what the second lever on the pump does!

There is a lever on the outer side of the pump which I recognise as the 'throttle' but a similar one at the engine side...………….I have answered my question …… yes what a plonker!
it has to be the stop device in fairness this and its cable are invisible in normal circumstances but I believe that is what it must be and I guess that it operates by pulling against the spring to shut off the engine.

Just in case I am wrong it will be great if someone can confirm this please! I had better put a temporary cord on this just in case the engine decides to start first time ( I also have a handy flat board to put over the air intake in case the engine tries to run away) ( and ear muffs!)

Many thanks

Thanks guys and, yes, it must be the 'stop' lever and I guess it just shuts off the fuel. We shut down the engine with a pull switch which we have referred to as the decompressor even though I knew there was no decompressor fitted! The pump on the boat is really difficult to see or get at so we never followed the cable through to see just what it did!!
One good thing from this rebuild exercise is that I am finding out a lot more about the installed engine!

I only said that because one day the cable stop parted company, and there was a little lever on the pump that stopped the motor! I thought it sounded familiar!

I had that happen but the vibration of the running engine caused the lever to move to the stop position.

I had to rig a temporary cable (cord) to get the engine running again mid ocean.
