While looking over the engine after fitting the new starter battery I noticed I have a small oil leak which has left a small pool of oil in the hand cranking starter shroud next to the starting handle dog. See photo

Is this something to worry about?

I have not noticed any significant oil loses underneath the shroud tube in the past, but do remember some time ago reading a post that someone had written with a similar observation, but can’t find the post now or what the out come of it was.

It's the oil seal.Drill it with a 2mm bit, carefuly, and thread a selftapper into it.Pull with pliers and replace with like. You must first remove the shroud and tap the pin out.

Thanks for the reply 30 Boat ,

So it's relatively easy to extract the seal with pliers, and you don't need an extractor of any kind. I had visions of having to remove the whole casing which would be quite a job. If it's only the two screws and the pin it should be quite easy?

Mind having said that, most ten minutes jobs on a boat usually take about 5-6hrs from past experience !

Thanks again Philip - :encouragement:

It's very easy really.Use a very sharp drill and do it slowly and lightly. You can drill on top and bottom and use two screws, sharp and long ones. That makes it easier to pull the seal out. When fitting the new one tap it home slowly with a socket or a tube. There may not be a stop inside so don't push it too deep.

Have managed to track the part number down and the seal is a SC 16-28-6, which I have traced to also a Tohatsu Outboard motor spare dealer close by me. He is going to order me one for £2.43 +vat and carriage, and be here before the end of the week?

Should be less than a fiver , what a " Result " :)

Thanks for your help :encouragement:

Philip

I had a difficult to find oil leak at the "back" an old 2GM20 from a corroded steel oil tube that ran round the top of the engine.
The replacement was non ferrous! But your engine looks newish unless you've painted it, so maybe your tube is not steel.

Slight fred- how much of a job to swap out the hand starter shaft? Mine's not leaking (2QM) but its snapped across the pin hole.

It's not a priority, it's a good starter and the awkward location for cranking probably explains the damage.

It's the end of the camshaft I'm afraid. You'll have to live without it.Page 2.29
