Per a recent post, I just lost mine to the sea. The drive in question is 1989 vintage and my other drive is 2000 manufacture. The cone nut that has arrived is the one that would suit the 2000 drive - i.e. it has a 19mm head on its locking bolt. The 1989 drive has a locking bolt with a 13mm head. Can anyone advise the part number of the cone nut or kit that is needed for the 1989 drive with the 13mm locking bolt?

p.s. the 1989 drive locking bolt must be about 6mm shaft compared to a 10mm shaft on the 2000 drive. i.e. it's not just the head of the locking bolt that is different.

Thanks for any help.

Got the kit 872614 from Keypart today. Three questions:-

1. When the rear prop dropped off it appears I also lost the part called "line cutter" which sits between the props. Looking on line, this was p/n 853441 but seems to be replaced with "Thrust Washer" p/n 3858458. Is this part essential?

2. The locking bolt supplied will not fit through the cone nut (aka "Spinner"). Am I supposed to use a 13mm hex socket etc. to almost tap the cone nut? The locking bolt looks as though this might work as it is only threaded part way suggesting it would become captive if I do this (if it's possible).

3. Finally, there is a washer with the locking bolt. Does this go at the hex head of the locking bolt or forward of the rear propeller.

The instructions supplied assume that the locking bolt and washer are already in situ insofar as there is no mention of them as separate components (also not listed on the parts list on the box supplied).

Thanks again for any advice.

YES, it's the thrust washer. The prop won't be in the right place without it.

Mine doesn't drop out it you turn it upside down, but it isn't "threaded" as such, it just requires some gentle-ish twiddling with a socket and wrench to get it in or out.

Hex head of the locking bolt.

Flowerpower, thanks very much. I think I might have been lacking the thrust washer in the first place and that might have caused the locking bolt to bottom and subsequently shear its head off. I will get a washer before refitting.

With regard to (2) i'd suggest you ensure the bolt is able to turn freely in the cone nut. It's possible there are two cone nuts, one for the M8 bolt and one for the M12 bolt, you may need to drill the cone nut for clearance. If there is no clearance it will not lock the cone nut, the two threads will "fight" each other.

PaulGooch, so far as I have understood there are two sizes of cone nuts. The one I'm having the problem with is M16 onto the drive shaft with M8 locking bolt and the later version (which I have on port side) which is M20 drive shaft with M12 locking bolt.

The cone I lost had a captive M8 bolt (I know because the remains of it were left in the drive shaft) but I inherited it with the boat - i.e. I never actually installed the M8 bolt through the cone.

I think if I can get the M8 bolt as supplied through the cone nut then it will turn freely as it has just a small amount of thread and then a smooth shaft which is what the previous bolt had.

Thanks for your help. Any further advice greatly appreciated.

Ah, i see. So long as the bolt can turn when you get it in, it'll be fine then.

fwiw,
and make sure you tighten the regularly replaced locking bolt to the correct torque ....

seems like overtightening is a common cause for the locking bolt to also fail / shear off resulting in loss of cone, outer prop etc and ££££'s all for a £6 bolt ....
Got that t shirt as well ....

Thanks all, I've got the locking bolt through the cone ok. Just waiting now for a thrust washer to arrive to place between the 2 props. Hoping it will arrive tomorrow.

Thrust washer arrived. Seems it fits into the prop itself. All OK so far until I try to fit the new cone nut. Instructions advise that with "A" props (which I am sure I have as it's AD31 engines) need the plastic spacer but with the spacer fitted the nut will not reach the shaft; without the spacer, all is fine. Photos of the drives from the past show that no plastic spacer was in place. Got me wondering if I somehow had "B" props but the boat performance suggest not as I get 3,900 RPM at 26kts WOT which would be normal I think for a Sealine 285 with twin AD31s 130bhp; also I have changed the props since getting the boat and bought A6s from eBay and from someone who sold me his from an S28 (twin diesels) who was upgrading to S/S; all props seem to be the same with a recess at the aft end to allow the cone nut to fit in without the plastic spacer.

Any ideas anyone?

I don't understand those instructions. Maybe "any propellors apart from" got lost in the translation from Swedish.

I have A6's and no spacer, only the thin washer thing that clips onto the back of the cone.
