290 DP Bellow Kit - Go with genuine?

Last question, I promise!

May be a silly thing to ask... but, where that meets the shift mechanism on top, there is a washer and a tiny split pin. I was concerned when I removed the old split pin as it had rusted and just broke away... this could lead to serious issues if it broke away while being used.

Is there a specific split pin for this? (Can't see it in diagram), or, so you just use a bit of metal wire or what? (I hope not!)

Should be stainless steel. If it broke in the water you would be stuck in gear or not able to select a gear. Not sure what is happening with these but people seem to be supplying yellow metal split pins when ordering them. When I last did mine I actually reused the old stainless ones as I didn't like the look of the yellow ones I was sent. Had dealings with a boat last year who lost gear selection when one of these yellow split pins broke. It had been fitted only a couple of month's before and has corroded away!

We just brought the original into CH Marine and they gave us the closest size stainless they had. As far as I remember they were a mill or two longer but made no difference as long as the thickness is the same.

I'll ask the local engineering firm for some stainless split pins... but the hole is tiny! Not sure if they'll have anything that small.

PS. Just responded to your e-mail :)

All the bits arrived today, so will start to re-assemble next week when I get back from abroad.

Rather than start a new thread... manual states to also use some liquid sealer when re-assembling the top / intermediate housing of the out-drive. Question is, will any liquid gasket that you get from a motor factor do the job?
