Hi,
I would be interested to hear from owners of any 28FT Bayliner models fitted with the Mercruiser/cummins 200hp td motor and Bravo 3 drive.

Reason is that I'm interested in purchasing a Bayliner 2858 that has this set up but on reading various worldwide boating forums this particular set up seems to get a mixed press.

Some say underpowered while others say fine!?

Or even anyone who has this set up in an approximate same size vessel.

Many thanks
Rob

I would like to know a little bit more ie, does it have a turbo, is it dual prop and is she reaching her rpm. I have been on one with a non turbo with a OMC leg and it does 22knots with 2 up and 8knots with 6 up, if I was going to put my head on the block I would say that the bravo three needs a lot more engine...

It's actually the other way round. The BIII being twin counter rotating props, as apposed to the Alpha and Bravo II which are a single prop, is more efficient and required less power for the same speed.

I can't find a calculator for this engine/drive, but there is a handy boat speed indicator on the VP website here.

Not an exact science, but using the slightly lower powered D3-190 (I know, torque figues will be different, but it the best I can do).

The 2858/288 is 9.33 metres LOA, with a displacement of 3670kg. Stick those figures in the VP calculator and:

With a D3-190 and a duoprop you would be looking at 27knts MAX.
Ok, so the Mecruiser has another 10Hp (5% ish) but you are basically looking at around 28knts in perfect conditions. Cruising is going to be around 22-24knts. Not too bad, but you would want to keep the boat clean and your friends light.

sounds a bit weedy, my 2655 wide beam with petrol mercruiser and bravo 2 leg will do 32 knots and cruises at 23-25 really easy, doesn't seem to matter how many people are onboard....you can't beat horses /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My current 2556 is near enough the same!

However I want a larger more economical vessel.

Very rare there are more than me and SWMBO aboard and very rare In any boat I've owned that I cruise at more than 16/18knots.

Yes it has a turbo, and this motor was a factory standard installation, all the 2858 diesel's had this combo pre 1998.

Jez thanks for the info.

isn't this the 220hp 4.2 lump?

not argueing the extra 20 just trying to understand the installation.

cruisers use this in the 2870 (31ft), Nimbus stick the 240 Yanmar in similar.

gearing matters

at the end of the day if you are looking for a sportsboat you don't have enough grunt - if you are looking for a potentially economical cruiser - fine.

sea trial will answer any performance concerns but this isn't a performance package

easy to maintain

cheap to run

performance - no.

Duncan,
They have produced three versions of this 4.2 motor and from what I can gather ......pre 98 200hp post 98 until 2002 (ish) 220hp and later all became 250hp.....

I'm certainly not looking for or expecting a sports cruiser,my enjoyment of boating involves the social aspect of staying aboard at my local marina coupled to the enjoyment of double tide fishing trips where I motor out into the bay (Carmarthen)switch off, drift for 8 or so hours while trying my best to catch a double figure Bass(20 yrs + and still trying) and then starting her back up and motoring back to my berth for a well earned cold one having worked so hard all day!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Added to this the economy afforded by this particular set up would allow us to explore a little more of the west Wales coastline without having to worry about the fuel burn.

Cheers
Rob

I have a 2858 with a 300hp on a bravo 3. I had a 200hp merc on a bravo 3 in my old 2556.
Based on this I think a 200hp in a 2858 would be hopelessly underpowered.
PM me and I'll take you for a spin in mine so you can have some more evidence.

Oh and it's slightly more comlicated than that - there was a 200 and a 220 available at the same time, I think they were called L and LX. The 220 was light duty (ie leisure use only) and the 200 whilst basically the same engine was down tuned and warranted for limited commercial use. Externally the engines are the same and both 4.2L. A 180hp 3.6 was also available and also with identical exterior dimensions so I assume the same block. They later upped it to 250 with EFi.

Hi and thanks for that information and offer of a spin,a good friend has a new 288 same as 2858 with the 250 efi and I must say I'm impressed with the way she travels.

However 288's are over my budget and thats why I'm considering the 2858/200hp.

Nice package you have there.

Thanks
Rob
