Al what is your budget? You'll get a lot better advice if people know what you've got to spend.

I'd suggest looking for something that has the spec you want rather than fixing it up yourself. DIY is great for cosmetic issues, but if you need to install loads of equipment then it will just cost you twice as much. Get something with good sails and a good engine and whatever else you feel you need. A windvane or autopilot could cost you £1000s but will add little to the value of a boat on the market.

I've just gone from a 28'er to a 35' Westerly, and it's actually easier to single hand it. If you intend to live aboard then I would get the biggest damn thing you can for your money. An Albin Vega willl be very cramped, and although they are good sea boats, I'd go for a more modern design if money allowed. A lot of people suffer in small cramped boats safe in the knowledge that it will do them well if the weather turns bad, and a lot of people sail across the atlantic in modern production cruisers and survive quite nicely.

All the well known boats are overpriced, you might be able to find something not so well known but really good for a great price rather than going for a Westerly, Moody etc...

I own (and live on) a 1973 Westerly Longbow (That's just the name of the fin keeled version) rear cockpit sloop masted variety.

It has amazing space inside (6' headroom) and sails really well in the limited experience that I have.

If you are in the UK and want to come and see her then drop me a PM (I'm in the north west).

Mine was very cheap at £6750 on eBay and I don't know your budget but they're an amazing amount of yacht for a little amount of money.

I see that earlier you confused a Westerly 33 with the Renown. The Renown is built on the 31 foot hull (common to Berwick, Longbow and Pentland) and they are all older and cheaper than the W.33. I liked the look of a W.33 and thought of moving up a size but found that the (slight) extra space in the 33 was not worth the difference between what I would probably get for the Renown and what was asked for the 33. IIRC the difference was in excess of £10k.

There were over 1000 Westerly 31s (I am sure someone will tell us exactly what then split is between Berwicks etc was) and I have seen them in a range of price between £16k and £27k. I have never seen one on ebay yet and certainly not at under £10k. You are right to budget for sails and rigging, but there is not much difference between the cost for a "large" 30ft luff sail for a 27 ft boat and the "small" 30ft luff one that the Westerly requires. The same is true of rigging. I regigged a 28 footer, using 60 metres of 6mm stainless 1X19 wire. I ended up with about 7 metres left over. My Renown needed only 45 metres of 6mm plus 12 metres of 7mm for the forestay. Not much cost difference again.

I only got mine 10 weeks ago... so they do come up. Don't forget that you can get eBay to e-mail you if anyone lists what you are looking for (You set up a saved search with e-mail notifications on).

I know mine was a bargain and she does need a bit of work doing but £6750 got her with a "new" 5 year old engine and what look to be pretty new sails and excellent condition stays etc.

The boom we shall not mention though... anyone got one I can have? :)
