29ft boat

there was a 1984 Lynx 29 fin keel on ebay a couple of weeks ago. Starting at £12400 & no bids. Seller had bought another boat & was trying to sell old before end of season. Appeared to be in good condition/well equipped. The Lynx is reasonable fast, good accomodation & very seaworthy. Might be worth a look.

At the upper end of your budget, but if you want to consider a more modern design, I'd recommend having a look at a Jeanneau Sun-Dream 28 (actually 29.5 feet/9m). Sails well, 2 separate double sleeping cabins and separate aft heads. Easy to singlehand, large cockpit, wide side decks. See here, there's one in Plymouth asking price £22,950. I live on mine, I think it would be a good boat for the purpose you've described...

I think you'd struggle to get a Moody 28 for under 20K, but you might just do so with the Moody 29,tho it might then need a little updating. The 29 is a slightly older boat, but younger than the 30 and very little difference in size (9.04 cf 9.2). Saloon table folds up against the bulkhead and gives bags of space in the saloon. Like most people who have posted on this thread, I like it cos I have one! But looked at many Sadler 29s, Konsorts, Cobras and Mirage 29s among others and we still picked the M29.

What about a freedom 28? There is one down in Falmouth for £12000 inboard Volvo etc.
Any one know what these are like?

I have a Freedom 28 (called 30 in UK and 28 in USA) - my 20th boat. It is the centreboard version but I rarely use this as I sail in very shallow waters. Has all the advantages of a long keel - deep forefoot and draft of just under three feet. Goes like the wind with a long waterline - won the last club (circular ten miles) race against Beneteau 31', Moody 31, Victoria 30, LM 30, Sadler 32 and more.
So seakindly with a modest beam and slim quarters and a joy to manoeuvre - no keel stall so can sail on the wind to almost a standstill. The mizzen can act as an air rudder to push the stern round so very little use of engine. Directionally very stable.
Limited acommodation but so aesthetically pleasing both inside and under sail.

Hustler 30

You'll get a cracking hustle 30 for 15K. Mine and I have done 14000 miles in the last 6 years including aores and the north cape of norway. The accomodation is small but when you get things wrong and get caught out she'll look after you and not grumble about it afterwards!

For elegance and good seakindly motion, try the Shipman 28. There are a few of varying quality and price on apollo duck. Don't forget it is a buyers market with some sellers prepared to sell considerably below the advertised price as I was pleased to discover recently.
