Evening

I know this has been discussed loads and loads of times, but I'm hoping to move from a 23 motor boat to a 28 to 30 foot yacht. I'm looking at the following:

Colvic Countess 28
Dufour 2800
Gibsea 282
Lynx 29
Moody 28
Sadler 29
Westerly Konsort

My budget is a max of 20,000 but realistic looking at 15,000 a not older than 1980. I plan to use it for weekends away and occasionally weeks away with the family (2 young kids).

Have I missed any others ?

Cheers

Stu

Thats a very short list out of a huge range of possibles, but at least the boats are broadly comparable - although doubt you will be able to get many of them within your budget - certainly not the lower figure if they are any good!

A list of pretty decent boats indeed - but I agree with Tranona. You will struggle to find some of these in reasonable form within a budget of 20K. This may not be important if you are prepared to put in a lot of restorative work but that takes time and comes with its own budget. Personally, for weekends or weeks aboard I (and even moreso Mrs Gasdave) would prefer someting that wasn't too tatty!

If you dropped your size a little to 26' your options would open up considerably and still be managable for a smallish crew for short holidays.

I had a friend with the Gibsea and found it had a strange "hareem" accomodation plan and an odd motion at anchor.
Even ones I've seen under sail seem to have an odd motion.

How about an Anderson 26 ?!

Lift keel, designed after the 1979 Fastnet inquiry, seaworthy with bulwarks & foam bouyancy etc but goes like a rocket !

Not a treble aft cabin job for huge crews.

Yes I run the Anderson 22 & 26 Owners Association -

www.anderson22class.co.uk

but I don't make a penny out of them selling !

The A26 was sold in small numbers, as Andersons lost their 'bread and butter' MOD contract and went bust before more than about 8 A26's could be built.

Another company built a few more, but the production moulds were lost in a fire years ago.

There is good back-up for the boats though.

Otherwise I'd strongly suggest stretch your budget & go for a Sadler 29.

On a tight budget - actually on any budget - it is probably easier to search on price and see what pops up. Wouldn't it be a shame to miss something you like at a price you can afford somewhere convenient for you just because you haven't heard of it?

What about a freedom 28? There is one down in Falmouth for £12000 inboard Volvo etc.
Any one know what these are like?

Three years ago S.T. mag did an article on YCA 29 or Everitt 29 which stated the price from 14 thou on.It is a very good boat and very similar to the Sigmas. And if you can get your hands on the 30 type you ll be surprised with the finish in the accomodation.I've seen in the past a couple of threads about them and as a satisfied owner of one i can recommend them.

I think you are all wrong!!! Stownsend should buy my Trapper 500 with its lovely Blakes epoxy job and brand new interior upholstery. The bonus would be you would save enough money to take the wife and kids on a blinding holiday out of your budget and bask in the warm glow of appreciation for the next year or so!!!!!! Simples!!!
